Cherry Thing-A-Ling

For 35 years, Washington's birthday has been celebrated in the Batesville Indiana with the cherry-studded, cherry glazed, deep fried fritter from Schmidt's Bakery, Baker and owner Clem Schmidt calls them Cherry Thing A Lings. People will start lining up outside the bakery well before 6:30 AM to buy them by the dozen fresh out of the fryer.


In 2011, 18,000 of the fresh from the fryer fritters were sold in 2 days. Thing a lings are $12.00 a dozen. Schmidt's Bakery hours are Sat. 2/18 and Mon. 2/20, 4:00 AM-till 5:00 PM; and 2/19, Sunday 6:00 AM till 4:00 PM. Sunday, free carriage rides will be provided (weather permitting) to escort Cherry Thing A Ling goers around downtown Batesville to various shops. All participating businesses will be identified by painted "Cherries" in the their windows.
