Cody Rose (@codylouisrose)
Director, Restaurant Strategy & Product Development @ Square

A self proclaimed restaurantreprenuer, Cody Rose grew up immersed in the restaurant industry. While most kids were constructing tree forts, Cody was serving, bussing, and occasionally even cooking- honing the skill sets necessary to build a successful career in the restaurant industry.

By age 13, Cody was already a staple at his family’s restaurant. Within a few years, Cody was managing the 80 seat, full-service restaurant after school and handling everything from staff schedules to bank deposits. With a breadth of experience under his belt, Cody was consulting for local restaurants while in college, and, by the age of 22 was on the fast-track to a career in the national restaurant scene consulting for QSR brands including Qdoba, Noodle’s & Co., and Smashburger.

In 2010, Cody join OpenTable where he leveraged his operational experience to effectively manage over 1,800 restaurant accounts in the reservation giants most prominent market, New York City. Seeing an immense opportunity to build powerful restaurant technology products for the non-reservation market, Cody left OpenTable to create the Google-Ventures and Andreesen Horowitz-funded company Nosh and in December 2011, launched NoshList, a disruptive text-based restaurant waitlist solution built by the same team behind Google Voice.

A completely free solution, NoshList quickly grew in popularity and just 9 months after launch, had already been implemented in more than 1,500 restaurants across all 50 states. With prominent clients including every company-owned Red Robin and multiple Buffalo Wild Wing’s franchisees less than a year after launch, NoshList was already seating over one million diners per month- a milestone that took OpenTable 9 years to reach.

Just 12 months after launching NoshList, Cody was approached by Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, to join his latest company, Square. Acknowledged by Fast Company Magazine in 2013 as the world’s 3rd most innovative company, Cody joined Square in 2013 to lead Restaurant Product & Strategy, the disruptive mobile payment company’s first vertically specific product division.

Favorite memory from FSMU 2012

There are a lot to choose from, but building relationships with leaders in the industry and my peers that I've only known digitally, was huge. Not to mention, a few of us turned Italian for a night, when the Cubs game was rained out. Ayyyyyy

What is your favorite memory from FSMU?

Sneaking out for a beer between sessions with a rabble rousing crew.. am I allowed to say this?  (in other words, awesome networking and fun!)

Favorite memory from FSMU?

The event as a whole was incredibly well planned and executed, and there didn’t seem to be any attendee who could find a negative thing to say about its quality. Everyone from independent chains to large corporate brands were represented, providing a great opportunity for this variety of players to learn from each other. There were several networking events, some planned and some spontaneous. The overall experience was incredibly positive and I’m looking forward to being a part of the team this year!

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Hamish Jolly: A shark-deterrent wetsuit (and it's not what you think) - Hamish Jolly (2013)

Hamish Jolly, an ocean swimmer in Australia, wanted a wetsuit that would deter a curious shark from mistaking him for a potential source of nourishment. (Which, statistically, is rare, but certainly a fate worth avoiding.) Working with a team of scientists, he and his friends came up with a fresh approach — not a shark cage, not a suit of chain-mail, but a sleek suit that taps our growing understanding of shark vision.

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.
