Reinventing Marketing and using Web 2.0 tools

Marketing and communication has seen enormous change in the past several years, as we continue to embrace and utilize Web 2.0 technologies. With blogs, review sites, forums, social networks and Twitter, we now have an unique opportunity to better engage interactively with customers and employees. This is a powerful force of change. I know, we all are a bit overwhelmed at times with messaging, particularly the unsolicited ones from, say, Nigeria. Or, those pesky lottery emails here to save the… Continue

10,000 members and getting stronger

So cool, the FohBoh community has over 10,000 members now. Congratulations! Why is this such a big deal? Well, this is the first time that we have a shared place to meet, discuss, learn, share, connect, communicate, vent and network 24/7/365. The restaurant industry is a true community and we needs a place to hang and call our own.

The NRA created this video last year for the industry, as well as for those not part of the industry… Continue

Hot Italian in Sacramento

Andrea Lepore is the co-founder and principal of the still under-development, all-Italian pizzeria concept coming soon to Sacramento, California. "Hot Italian" is a new, hip all green restaurant and scooter shop near downtown. They are getting a lot of buzz and based on what I have seen and tasted, they will change the way we think pizza should taste. No kidding!

Pizzaiolo is a pizza chef; a passionate pizza craftsman and pizza-maker that is incredibly focused and dedicated to honing… Continue

Starbucks to settle NLRB case in Michigan

This story was plucked from Associated Press, but powerful enough to re-post nonetheless.

NEW YORK - Starbucks Corp. said Wednesday it will settle a dispute with the National Labor Relations Board over a Michigan barista who said he was fired for participating in union activities.

The settlement allows Starbucks to avoid an administrative trial that was scheduled to begin today. More of the story

Is Stimulus the new buzz word?

So really, a cookie bailout? This is the best they can come up with? This is a pretty serious economic situation we have going on that is affecting a lot of folks, and in particular, our industry.

I heard yesterday that the porn industry was actually asking congress for billions to bail it out. Internet is killing that industry, bummer. This of course was led by Mr. Flynt (Hustler) and Joe Francis, the Girls Gone Wild dude that is, I… Continue

BLT NYC

Interesting grouping of letters, but a very powerful message to restaurateurs. BLT Steak is an impressive operation. My perspective is clearly FOH as a guest and not a management review, but I think we can learn something here.

Having dined at their Washington D.C. location and now twice in NYC on E 57th, they rock. There are four areas that I look at when I dine; food, service, ambiance and energy. BLT delivers on all four, completely and consistently.

I try not to write… Continue

Inviting all hourly employees to join FohBoh

One of our more active members here at FohBoh reminded me of something that was part of our original plan. Paul said that "FOHBOH is unique because you have welcomed hourly restaurant staff to sit at the industry leadership table."

This is extremely important and valuable as we continue to grow membership and bank knowledge from many perspectives worldwide. Our future leaders will likely come from hourly positions and having them here, now, contributing, sharing and learning will no… Continue

Happy First Birthday FohBoh!

Happy 1st Anniversary FohBoh!

It’s always a good to look back and reflect on what your year was like. Some people seem to look toward December 31st as a way to say hello to a new year or say good-bye or even good riddance to last year. I guess it depends on the events that occurred and the goals you had as well as the things you can’t control.

Jack Canfield and Brian Klemmer, among other life coaches, like to say… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.
