Fear of loss vs Potential for Gain

So many questions recently from folks telling me about their struggles in shifting from a “command and control” leadership style to a more acceptable “grow, learn, and develop” style. They all include the same thing, speed and accountability. Here are just a few.

“It seems to take so long to gain ground.”

"My boss needs results faster from me and I am going to have to just make my people do it soon.”

“My team doesn’t always take… Continue

What would you do if you lost the ability to consume food via your mouth?

Roger Ebert, one of the country’s most recognized movie reviewers just wrote a column about not having the ability to eat or drink anymore. I was polarized – a deer in headlights, frozen in time thinking what life is like having the ability to enjoy food and beverage and if I lost that gift.

Read about Ebert's struggles and triumphs at the Dining… Continue

How One Bar Owner Gets A Near Perfect Inventory Result

Speaking to a nightclub owner recently who turns over $100,000+ per week in his busy city centre premises I learned that his weekly variance/stock loss is less than $200 at cost.

I know of other businesses taking in $6000 per week that have the same losses. So how does the nightclub owner do it? Its actually quite simple: He systemises his business and has implemented basic procedures to control stock from receipt to eventual… Continue

Food Contamination: What's Really Covered?

Insurance carriers offering restaurant insurance have specialized endorsements specifically tailored to the restaurant industry.

Food Contamination is a generic term used in many of these endorsements. A close inspection of the policy provisions will reveal that the first party coverage (your income, your property) provided for food contamination can differ significantly from one insurance carrier to another.

Many policies first party coverage for food contamination will… Continue

12 Bartender Scams That are Costing You Profits

by Ian Foster

As a BEVINCO auditor, I often hear the comment that "all bartenders steal". Although sometimes it might seem to be true, that accusati on probably isn't fair.

In my experience, 25% of all bartenders are completely honest all the time and do a great job - those are the ones we all want to find and retain. The majority, probably half of all bartenders, will play by the rules as long as they believe that the operator has adequate controls in place and see that… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?
