Operators will include restaurant employees, managers and owners, as well as employees and executives of restaurant groups and chains. Signing up and using an operator membership will be very similar to the way it is now:…

Restaurant Social Media Explained

Ok so I am jumping on the "[Insert your interest here] Social Media Explained" train. If you haven't seen them there are a few that have been circulating the web using Donuts as a point of reference as well as using the bathroom to explain social media.

Well here's my stab at restaurant social media…

Why I "Eat More Chikin"

I often ask myself, why are you obsessed with Chick-Fil-A? Maybe it’s their waffle fries, or tasty breakfast options? Maybe the incredible customer service is to blame. Maybe it’s that the nearest location to me is hours away, and we all know absence makes the heart grow fonder. In the end I tend to blame it on the Polynesian sauce.   …

Evolving Social Media Management Services

Social media is a force of change that is evolving how we work in the marketing suite. When I founded FohBoh 40 months ago as a restaurant social network, social media was a foreign language. Now, it is almost a language in it of itself with "experts and everything.” As with any profession, there are those more skilled than others, disparate philosophies, even early best practices based on varying levels of experience. I don’t believe any one possesses the dominant view,…

Do Social Media Experts Exist?

More and more I am seeing articles, blogs, webinars, etc talking about the “social media expert”. This title has become one of my biggest pet peeves. Before I read or watch any of these I always seem to have the same initial overwhelming reaction. To me, social media experts don’t exist. You may be thinking, why would someone who lives and breathes social media and executes social media campaigns for several restaurant clients say something like this? Allow me to explain.

What's Up for 2011? Social Integration

2010 was a very interesting year for restaurants and restaurant social media. That means it was a pretty amazing year for us here at FohBoh. Why? Because it’s just starting to gel and we can see investment starting to take place. As a start-up, it’s always a good thing to be ahead of the curve. Be the “first mover”, as they say, but not too far ahead. There are also many advantages to being “second mover”. I’ve written about this before citing Google, Oracle,…

Perspectives on the New Conversation Economy

This is an incredibly interesting concept: an economy fueled by dialog, by the crowd, via the Internet. We are using social networking platforms as the communications channel of choice. It's an amazing shift in human behavior that is real-time, all the time.

Now that nearly 82% of us are using some form of social network to interact, there is an opportunity to reflect on this and gain some perspective. In other works, why you should care.

First,…

Business Anniversaries

Interesting things, these anniversaries. We celebrate personal and family anniversaries and of course, the wedding anniversary. Some work anniversaries are important to track too, like the first, fifth, tenth, twenty-fifth and the one most people look forward to, the retirement anniversary - 30 years.

We celebrated our first year in business in 2008 and many within the FohBoh community, celebrated with us. We announced our second but no one seemed to care but us. I guess that's just… Continue

Rounding it Up

Two of my passions in life are the industry in which I work and giving back to my community. I'm even more excited when I get to combine the two. Throughout my years at FohBoh I have had some tremendous opportunities to work with some amazing organizations that raise money and give back to their communities and to those less fortunate. The restaurant industry has a unique opportunity to accelerate this effort in a good economy or a bad because lets face it, we all dine…

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Hamish Jolly: A shark-deterrent wetsuit (and it's not what you think) - Hamish Jolly (2013)

Hamish Jolly, an ocean swimmer in Australia, wanted a wetsuit that would deter a curious shark from mistaking him for a potential source of nourishment. (Which, statistically, is rare, but certainly a fate worth avoiding.) Working with a team of scientists, he and his friends came up with a fresh approach — not a shark cage, not a suit of chain-mail, but a sleek suit that taps our growing understanding of shark vision.

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.
