It's the Innovation, Stupid!

The Great Recession shook up lodging and food service companies of all sizes, and every one flattened their executive and management ranks while slashing G&A.  So how did some companies persevere, even grow, during the last three years?  Why are some striding, even strutting, while others are barely crawling?

Innovation.

Blog World Expo (Las Vegas): ROI = 'Return on Ignoring If Not Into Social Media"

I'm following Blog World Expo through Twitter starting last night, and admittedly, am a bit jealous of all the heavy social media hitters all being together in such a fun spot. If you want to follow also - just search the Twitter hashtag #BWE09. By the way, Paul Barron, Publisher of Fast Casual is there tweeting away at us...

Here are some quotes from just this morning:

If you aren't into social media, then just call ROI "Return on Ignoring".

We can talk social media until we are blue!

I always ask my friends, do you want the good news or bad news first? Facts are today that the restaurant industry is faced with the first negative index in more than 25 years, comps are down in 94% of the industry, food index is showing signs that all this could actually get worse before it gets better for the restaurant industry. Most my friends want the bad news first "most are in the restaurant business".

After all that doom and gloom many are asking where will the restaurant… Continue

The new face of Fast Casual

Fast casual design always pushes the envelope, and the “look good, feel good” approach crafted by Starbucks in the mid 90’s has transcended to leading-edge innovation in today’s concepts. I am continually surprised by the uniqueness and creativity of this space.

However, I recently was also surprised by some fast casuals’ lack of two equally, if not more important characteristics — attention to detail and quality.

I conducted a food tour in Dallas, during which my… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Hamish Jolly: A shark-deterrent wetsuit (and it's not what you think) - Hamish Jolly (2013)

Hamish Jolly, an ocean swimmer in Australia, wanted a wetsuit that would deter a curious shark from mistaking him for a potential source of nourishment. (Which, statistically, is rare, but certainly a fate worth avoiding.) Working with a team of scientists, he and his friends came up with a fresh approach — not a shark cage, not a suit of chain-mail, but a sleek suit that taps our growing understanding of shark vision.

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.
