How is your restaurant getting in the Halloween spirit?

Yesterday, a few of us from FohBoh ventured down to Orange County to visit one of our clients. For lunch we went to Houston's, located in Irvine, CA. Upon entry we we're greeted enthusiastically by Britt, one of their bartenders. "Hi there! Did you guys check out my pumpkin yet??" He explained to us that their staff was each given a pumpkin to carve and then guests would vote on which they liked best.

I must say this guy had serious pumpkin carving skills. He made his…

Rounding it Up

Two of my passions in life are the industry in which I work and giving back to my community. I'm even more excited when I get to combine the two. Throughout my years at FohBoh I have had some tremendous opportunities to work with some amazing organizations that raise money and give back to their communities and to those less fortunate. The restaurant industry has a unique opportunity to accelerate this effort in a good economy or a bad because lets face it, we all dine…

Are all the links in the value chain pulling their weight?

As a supplier and distributor I find it frustrating to be working diligently with my clients to help them build a solid marketing platform so they can drive sales. If they sell more food then I move more boxes right? Well recently I have been thinking "maybe I should just skip the marketing training and go straight to the consumer?". This way I can drive demand from the real source.

I find many restaurateurs are just too busy working in their businesses trying to…

Is Customer Service Gone?

I went to a fast food chain for dinner with my six year old son this evening, and for legality purposes, the name of the restaurant will be withheld. My son found a table in the dining room next to the TV- unfortunately it was playing some eerie TV show about haunted houses, and because I did not want my son to be exposed to that type of…

A League of Their Own

I love technology and I have no clue how computers work. I don’t know how to back up my files and I don’t know a bit from a byte. I’m not exactly sure where computer viruses come from and I’m baffled by how these viruses can become debilitating to a computer. And I must admit I am bewildered by the thought that there are fake “spyware” programs…

Three Reasons Why Your Social Strategy Is Failing

I looked down and smiled at the finishing touches I had just made to a new flyer promoting my bike taxi business located on the sandy beaches of Ocean City, MD. I was proud of the work that I had done on this particular marketing piece and was eager to start handing them out to hotel concierges, restaurant managers and other service providers to foster new affiliate relationships.

My business partner looked over my work, gently smiled and then asked me, “You’ve got…

Five Key Strategies You Need To Dominate Local Search

Bryan Harris, the managing partner of Outback Steakhouse in Durham, NC, doesn't know what a slow night is. He doesn't worry that he's overstaffed or whether the tomatoes that he just chopped will spoil. He doesn't need to.

And it's not because of Outback's brand equity, his restaurant's location or even his latest direct mail campaign. It's because he has a killer local strategy. The bottom line is that if…

What Does the Ilinois Restaurant Association Think About Food Trucks?

I have always loved food trucks and flirted with the idea many times myself, wondering why "roach coaches" haven't gone upscale. They have. Filling Up our Tank

In a recent meeting, one of our best customers referred to FohBoh as an A380 waiting to be fueled and take off. Recently my cousin David had a chance to be among the first people to fly on the A380. For those of you who are not airline savvy, the A380 is the world's largest commercial jet, holding up to 600+ passengers and designed for long haul routes. Seeing as the first 747 was delivered in the late 1960's isn't it amazing that we haven't seen a truly new jetliner in almost… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: James Patten: The best computer interface? Maybe ... your hands - James Patten (2013)

"The computer is an incredibly powerful means of creative expression," says designer and TED Fellow James Patten. But right now, we interact with computers, mainly, by typing and tapping. In this nifty talk and demo, Patten imagines a more visceral, physical way to bring your thoughts and ideas to life in the digital world, taking the computer interface off the screen and putting it into your hands.

TED: Hamish Jolly: A shark-deterrent wetsuit (and it's not what you think) - Hamish Jolly (2013)

Hamish Jolly, an ocean swimmer in Australia, wanted a wetsuit that would deter a curious shark from mistaking him for a potential source of nourishment. (Which, statistically, is rare, but certainly a fate worth avoiding.) Working with a team of scientists, he and his friends came up with a fresh approach — not a shark cage, not a suit of chain-mail, but a sleek suit that taps our growing understanding of shark vision.

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?
