UNICEF's TAP Project Supports World Water Day

Posted on March 22, 2008 at 8:33am 3 Comments

Over 2,000 restaurants around the country this week are charging $1.00 for each glass of water they serve customers, ending today. UNICEF claims that a child in a developing country will have 40 days of clean water for every $1 glass purchased this week. It's an interesting experiment and interesting to see how much UNICEF raises this way.

My first reaction, selfishly, was to think, OMG, everything is going up in price: gas, food, text… Continue

Great Service at Lucky Strike

Posted on February 27, 2008 at 10:18pm 2 Comments

Michael and I attended the Law Vegas Restaurant Show this week and incidentally ended up last night at the Rio. We decided to kick back at the Lucky Strike bowling alley there. I call it "bowl for booze" because it was an incredible package combining modern, hip, upscale bar with food, large screen videos, lounge,… Continue

Social Network Fatigue

Posted on January 28, 2008 at 6:09am 10 Comments

It might be time to break out that pillow—are you starting to suffer from “SNF”? Social networking is exploding beyond the confines of the massive walled gardens of MySpace and Facebook to embrace smaller vertical or “niche” networks that better cater to specific areas of interest. BusinessWeek talks about this new phenomenon in this article. At what…

Sorry to email you out of the blue. I just wanted to take time to thank you for the work you put into the Xband Video Game Network back in the 1990’s. I made many friends through that service, and it was also what got me interested in computers, software, and the internet in general. The service was ahead of it’s time, but it came at just the right time for many people my age. Thanks again.

I wanted to personally invite you to join our discussions in regards to cheeses at the Cheese Group on FohBoh. Every week we introduce a new cheese and invite you to find it in your area, buy it, try it and then dicuss it with us. We could use someone like yourself who could give us some good, positive feedback.

Congrats on hitting 7000 members, Ted. I know you may (or may not) feel like you're on track for this year's goal, but it's still quite a feat and I wish you the best for the next six months.

Hi Ted,

I see you've a lot of questions about licensing your point system. We love what you've done as well. We are starting up our social network a CentralCoastToday.com. I'd be interested to learn if you are in fact licensing it. Thanks!

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.
