if only i'd had fohboh

To the uninitiated, restaurant ownership seems like an easy, fun way to make money. But you don't know the half of it until you're in there doing it. I learned this the hard way. As an ex-owner of two juice/coffee bars, creating a cool concept and coming up with the work flow and systems and hiring and getting the whole thing started was fun... but the day-to-day was killer. The endless grind of management and payroll and ordering and inventory and legal, tax and employee issues turned out to be not the lifestyle I had envisioned. (You know the fantasy? The one where you hire managers to do everything while you sit back on a beach in Hawaii collecting deposits into your bank account? That's where I thought this thing was going.)

The day we sold those puppies was one of the happiest of my life. But if FohBoh had been around back then, perhaps my story would have ended differently.

This is a great post by Tom Pick over at Social Media Today. For anyone new to the blogging phenomenon, this is an entertaining primer on what not to do on the web (and FohBoh).

Testing the Power of a Restaurant Social Network

Posted on April 15, 2008 at 7:50pm 5 Comments

Okay, here's the deal. My daughter has one of those school projects that all parents love. You know the ones that they're supposed to do in on their own but the reality is that we have to get involved and have to do pretty much everything?

For this one, every student had to pick a country, do a report, and bring a dish from that country to a class event. Being the busy working mom type who can't cook, I immediately said, yes, we have… Continue

Ted to Speak at FS/TEC 2008

Posted on April 14, 2008 at 6:19pm 4 Comments

Anyone going to this week's FS/TEC 2008 in Grapevine, TX? If so, be on the lookout for Ted. He will be moderating a panel discussion called Using Online Social Networking for Your Business on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 2:30 pm. Additionally, he's a sucker for chocolate martinis and I'm sure would love to hook up with any Fohbites out there who might be attending.
