My recoomendation to you is to look at the Vancouver region. The reason I say this is that not only will you find a number of your Aussie's who vacation there or have friends and family there. The second reason is that Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. You want to definitely be a part of this!! There should be a # of opportunities in this realm, and after visiting Sydney myself in 2000 to watch the Summer Olympics, I think you would really like Vancouver and Canadians.

Canadians are quite fond of our Aussie friends, and I know when visiting Sydney, the people seemed to have the same sentiments.

Just remember to bring an umbrella to Vancouver if you land there as it rains quite a bit!
