FEED SPOKANE FOOD RESCUE COALITION
The restaurant and hospitality industry is well know for thier community involvement in a variety of charitable causes. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with people from all facets of this industry in an effort to develop the Feed Spokane Food Rescue Coaltion. Getting involved in this worthy endevor has provided me the means to apply my industry knowledge to something bigger than myself. Giving back to the community what I have gained from this industry brings it full circle and feels really good. Every area of the country could benefit from rescueing excess prepared food and getting it to those who need it. My work with Feed Spokane lead me this year into the Meals on Wheels budget cut crisis that resulted in the closing of the main preparation kitchen for the Spokane County MOW program. Through various philanthropic individuals in our community and several dedicated MOW personell, it was determined that this vital service could operate more efficiently under new leadership. A new location has been identified, but in the interim our Seniors needed to be fed.
Redeemer Lutheran Church generously offered the use of their commercial kitchen facilities to the MOW staff and volunteers but additional equipment was needed to prepare the 270 meals per day. I forwarded the local news article to our manufactures Reps, Voeller and Associates, and Reliance Marketing and asked them to contact their factories to see if they would be willing to help with donated equipment.
Meals on Wheels is elated to recieve the generous response of these two manufactures.
Rational donated a combi oven direct to Meals on Wheels, and our trusty local service company Swansons Refrigeration and Repair volunteered to install it for free to maintain the equipments integrity.
Cres Cor understood the need to keep hot meals hot and donated (3) Mobile Heated Holding Cabinets to the cause. The timing was perfect and the transition well planned and smooth. Our seniors did not miss any meals thanks to these wonderful companies that understood we all have a responsibility to our communities.
Bargreen Ellingson has handled the logistics and I continue to consult with MOW on the build out of the new kitchen which we hope will combine the central food preparation for the entire county.
I hope you will consider both of these manufactures in your next project. They truly embrace the Feed Spokane philosophy of:
"We Care, We Share".
