The Job Interview Of A Lifetime ( A Short Story )

Posted on March 12, 2010 at 7:48am 0 Comments

I couldn't believe my stroke of good luck when Stephen Peter telephoned me from Switzerland to ask me if I wanted to join Renaissance Cruises on their new ship being built in Italy. Here I was unemployed in Jasper Alberta during the slow season. The restaurant where I was working had closed for the winter about a month earlier. Now I was hoping that I would get a call from one of the cruise ship companies I had mailed a resume to just a couple of weeks before.

When Upselling This Word Works For Me

Posted on February 26, 2010 at 8:57am 0 Comments

I have noticed lately that my check average is about $10 higher in the last month or so which I guess you could say has helped me make okay money when compared to others whom I work with. Especially in these slow times we are experiencing.

One thing I am really focusing on is selling the feature martinis which go over $8.00 a drink. But another reason for the higher cheque average is my forte has always been on upselling the size of the steak. You might not get people ordering… Continue

Don't Talk During This Moment

Posted on February 23, 2010 at 6:42am 3 Comments

When the guest is settling the bill it is important not to talk. If you talk while the person is signing the credit card slip or putting their pin number in the debit machine you could actually blow the tip amount the guest might have left. You may say something that could lead them to think you are sucking up to them. Don't all of a sudden start talking about the weather or something stupid that will detract them from giving you the big tip. You have done the job and now it is time to just… Continue

My Best Top 5 Jobs - Number 2

Posted on February 11, 2010 at 12:00am 0 Comments

The last few weeks I have been going through what I consider my top 5 jobs of all time. Some that were pretty good didn't make the list but the reason why I chose what I did choose was not only were they fine jobs but each one changed my life in a certain way.

Number 5 - where I work now has given me the flexibility to be off when I have needed to be and kind enough to accomodate both my wife's and my hours so that we can play a big part in our kid's lives. That is a biggie… Continue

How Do You Eat An Elephant?

Posted on February 3, 2010 at 6:04am 0 Comments

Last night on a slow night made a $100 and have found a way to remember these recipes much better. You know the saying how do you eat an elephant one bite at a time. Well rather than try to cram all these recipes in my brain , I pick one and mention it to each table I greet each night. I started with the French Martini and not only do I remember the recipe now but I actually sold 4 of them or 25% of the people I served last night. Here are some more.

Hey Steve, great to be a contact. I just read over your profile and it's startling how similiar we are in what we've done. If you're ever in Winnipeg, drop me a line and/or visit me at my restaurant, that is if I'm not in some far off distant land doing another store opening. Cheers, Patrick

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" positioned 50,000 km from a telescope to enable imaging of planets about distant stars. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."
