Historic Clifton Mill

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 12:19pm 2 Comments

My son had never been to Clifton Mill, and looking for cheap things to do over Spring Break, I decided to take him there for breakfast. We had a great table overlooking the gorge and grist mill. We were one of two tables in the restaurant.

I ordered a Reuben with a cup of Vegetable Soup, and Michael ordered the Banana Walnut Pancakes. My soup was slow in coming, and rest came very soon after, too soon. The soup was not good. It was V-8 juice and frozen mixed veggies. They need to… Continue

Benham's For Restaurant Week

Posted on February 8, 2009 at 8:57am 0 Comments

For the last night of restaurant week, we chose to go to Benham's. I had really been looking forward to the meal, because of so many good things I had heard from friends who had previously been employed by Benham's.

There were five of us in our party. We were seated right away, but it was quite some time before our server greeted us. She had a party of ten next to us, so we remained patient while she tended to them. We ordered drinks, and they along with the restaurant week appetizer… Continue

Auntie Anne's & FYE

Posted on October 21, 2008 at 9:44am 3 Comments

Mary and Mary used the Auntie Anne's and F.Y.E. coupons this weekend. They were thrilled with the deal they got at Auntie Anne's. For a total of 2.00, they both received a combo of pretzel sticks and a drink. Although I usually try to avoid the chains, Auntie Anne's is consistently good. Fat and carbs...where can you go wrong? :)

The girls had some birthday gifts to buy for friends, so they also used the F.Y.E. coupon to purchase some CD's. It was a 20% coupon, and that is always a… Continue

Christopher's - Usually a Standby

Posted on October 3, 2008 at 7:39pm 0 Comments

Mary and I went to Christopher's Restaurant at 2318 E Dorothy Lane, Kettering on Tuesday afternoon. Christopher's is usually an old stanby. Typically everything is made from real food and is fresh. This time though, I was disappointed. I blame myself for ordering badly. I had this Italian craving, and I ordered their lasagna. I was touted as having four cheeses and homemade pasta sauce. I am not sure which four cheeses they chose to use, but one had a very bitter taste, and the sauce was… Continue

Carmel's - Nostalgia is way overrated

Posted on August 22, 2008 at 7:36am 0 Comments

Michael and I went to Carmel's day before yesterday. The place looks mostly the same since I worked there in the 1980's. While the menu has a few of same things, it is mostly different. Also, while pretty clean, it isn't spotless like it was when Vickie had it.

Michael ordered the Bronco Burger. It was hand pattied, not one of those hard frozen circles from Sysco. It had cheese, barbecue sauce, and onion rings on top. It came with fries which were not salted. This is one of my hugest… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.
