- Roy MacNaughton has more than thirty years of international business experience.
He has lived and worked in Canada, the USA, the UK, The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, and Australia. He graduated from Toronto’s Ryerson University in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, then worked in the daily operations side of the restaurant, resort hotel, fast food (QSR) and supply side of the hospitality industry.
He opened the very first Australian Burger King; and helped launch both KFC and Pizza Hut while in Sydney. He then served as the National Food Services Manager for the largest retailer in the Southern Hemisphere, based in Melbourne, later Adelaide.
Roy returned to school at age 29 to acquire his MBA. Within one year, he went on to establish his own firm, Hospitality Marketing, with a Ryerson classmate. Together, they provided marketing research, planning and advertising services to well-known firms including McDonalds, American Express, Four Seasons Hotels, Hilton International, KFC, Wendy’s, H.J. Heinz, Johnson & Johnson, and many others.
Within six years, he was hired away by one of his clients into the post of Executive Vice-President of Marketing for a $500 million company.. After two years in this position, he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of a fledgling subsidiary. He grew that division from $3.2 million with 11 units, to $72 million and 140 restaurants.
He eventually moved from the corporate world back into his own hospitality marketing advisory practice; and has been doing so ever since.
He has always used part time hospitality teaching, combined with extensive writing and public speaking to build his own awareness and business practice.
As an adjunct professor, he has taught at five different schools; including Johnson and Wales. In addition to his marketing advisory practice, he writes newspaper and online 'marketing' columns; and is a Contributing Editor for Today's Restaurant News.
Roy has recently signed on to take over the innovative site, www.RestaurantU.com, originally set up and managed by renowned Houston- area hospitality educator, Peter Langlois, aided by food service industry veteran, Charles Bernstein. Roy and partners will be renovating and revitalizing this site, originally designed to serve hospitality school students (and 'students' of all ages) worldwide. It is now under renovation; opening soon.
He has just published his first e-book, Restaurant Marketing for Free, an 88-page manifesto on how the independent restaurateur can survive and thrive in this hyper-competitive arena we're in these days. Today the New York Times carried a story titled:
“Forget Caviar: Holiday Parties feel the Pinch”
Even the venerable, Danny Meyer, CEO of Hudson Yards Catering and Union Square Hospitality Group, said: “(his) catering company has lost three grand-scale holiday parties by three different investment banks that we had done last year."

Today the New York Times carried an article about the tightening of personal credit.
I'm talking about credit cards: how hard it will be to get one; and more importantly
for the restaurant business….how spending limits are being cut back and interest
rates are being elevated.

Recently I mentioned how some restaurant review sites, like Yelp in particular, have been used to bludgeon the unsuspecting restaurateur.
The way this allegedly works is if (and when) a restaurant gets a negative review there is very little s/he can do about it…unless they respond (positively) to a sales rep who coincidentally contacts the restaurateur, shortly after that negative review appears on the site. I’m sure getting sick of hearing that our problems are caused by the economy. Everyone keeps talking about the “economy” and how it has caused this massive mess we’re in right now in our industry. Others keep asking if the sky is falling…or not.

What you doin' up so late?
I talked my employer (national chain) into letting me send out my own personal invites for our first Thanksgiving Day of being open in almost 20 years. While the brass into it, and I think it is a good idea, it will remain to be seen how the strategy pans out. I’ll keep you posted.
