"It seems to me that the best thing for a "clearing house" is going to be the market itself.   Customers are going to figure out what "social media" tools they want to use...restaurants need to be in a position to…"

Dear Panera Bread....What are You Thinking!?!

Posted on December 16, 2009 at 7:25am 17 Comments

Dear Panera Bread Just West Of Cleveland Ohio Off Interstate 90,

What are you thinking?

Early this morning I was traveling along I-90 and decided to stop for an hour or so and get some work done on my laptop. Normally, I'd try to find a local coffee house with wi-fi, but alas, there were none to be found at my exit. So i chose you...Panera.

Big mistake.

Turns out, my kids must have been facebooking on my computer last night and my battery is… Continue

Attracting New Guests...One of Those "Gotta Do's"

Posted on November 17, 2009 at 1:26pm 7 Comments

The necessity of attracting new guests into a restaurant is usually one of those things taken as a given...you just gotta do it.

That's true...you gotta do it...but sometimes it's worth thinking about both the upside and the downside of new guest attraction.

Here's the upside: Each new guest that happens to walk into your location has a real "future potential" dollar value. If you can convince them to come back multiple times into the future, then the "future potential"… Continue

Data, Marketing Reality and a Conversation With Your Spouse!

Posted on November 4, 2009 at 7:42am 2 Comments

I was jolted back into reality this morning when I read Seth Godin's blog posting on data, and the importance of using it when making making decisions.

You can read his entire blog post here: http://bit.ly/Dbfo9

Here's the take-away for restaurateurs: For too long, data has played second fiddle to gut-feel, nebulous brand building and an "everybody's doing it, so I need to do it as well" mentality. Restaurant marketing has devolved into a never ending spend-fest on special… Continue

Birthdays are a Great Excuse to Attract New Guests...

Posted on September 28, 2009 at 10:18am 6 Comments

About 1/2 of all restaurants have a birthday rewards program for existing customers...you know..."tell us your birthday and we'll send you a coupon" kind of thing.

Unfortunately, most restaurateurs don't realize that birthdays are a great (mostly untapped) way to reach customers who have never been to their restaurant.

In fact, birthdays are the most celebrated holiday on the planet, and almost 70% of Americans go out to eat at a restaurant to celebrate!

Here's… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" positioned 50,000 km from a telescope to enable imaging of planets about distant stars. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."
