It’s a stone cold lead pipe lock: Korean food will be the next big thing. No, I really mean it this time. Now I admit there have been some false starts in the past:

  • 2006Slashfood posted an article about Korean royal cuisine (surasan,) which appeared in The Korea Times leading some bloggers to hail Korean cuisine as the next big thing.

“Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good?” Brown Sugar The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers (1971)

Loathe as I am to prognosticate on such matters, (I prefer to leave such things to the experts like Nostradamus and Miss Cleo – besides if I really was good at it, I would be picking winning lottery numbers), I believe I have foreseen the next micro trend in food service. Call it “Culinary Intuition”. Its so cutting edge, so micro, a search of… Continue

I have a northeast business publication, Foodservice East, and www.foodserviceeast.com and am a friend of Darren Tristano, Ron Paul and Erik Thoresen. I've been enjoying your comments and would like your thoughts on burgers blossoming at the higher-end of the commercial restaurant segment in recent years. I am doing a story on the burger boom in my winter print issue.

Mathew: Thanks for saying Hi. Yes. You and your group do some great stuff. I've ran into a few articles you've done. I'm currently working on two research projects right now, one is an analysis of pe firms returns and how they compare to just restaurant pe firms. As soon as I get a little more organized on it, ill get you a copy of it. There are some interesting tidbits you might enjoy. Keep me in mind if you run into any related articles or studies as well. If you let me know what kind of projects you might have I'll keep you in mind as I sift threw quite a bit of data on a regular basis. Thanks For Reaching out.. Donald

Mathew,

Thanks for the comment on my blog post. Those statistics are very interesting, and I'm curious to see if the results will be in the same for California.

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?

TED: David Sengeh: The sore problem of prosthetic limbs - David Sengeh (2014)

What drove David Sengeh to create a more comfortable prosthetic limb? He grew up in Sierra Leone, and too many of the people he loves are missing limbs after the brutal civil war there. When he noticed that people who had prosthetics weren’t actually wearing them, the TED Fellow set out to discover why — and to solve the problem with his team from the MIT Media Lab.
