Technology and the Food Business

Posted on October 16, 2009 at 6:19am 4 Comments

In every facet of life today, technology's role is becoming more prevalent. Facebook and Twitter are now mainstream. "There's an app for that" has become a moniker more popular than "can you hear me now?" Pizza chains and fast casual concepts are adding successful features - now not only can you order your pizza online, but you can do it from your mobile phone, AND you can track it just like a FedEx package. That's right, from the moment you place the order you can see when… Continue

Devil's in the Details - You've Got To Outsmart the Label

Posted on July 24, 2009 at 2:49pm 2 Comments

Nutrition labels are better than the alternative - no nutrition labels. But like many things in these times, loopholes and deceptive tactics can mislead those who aren't paying attention.

Of course there are honest mistakes that slip through too - I read about a case where a jar of spaghetti sauce had 2 components that were 1 and 4 grams of carbs respectively. In the bold print above announcing the Total carbs said 2 grams. The manufacturer admitted and corrected the error, but that… Continue

Stricter Food Labels - weigh in

Posted on February 19, 2009 at 6:17am 7 Comments

Obama's administration is wasting no time implementing programs and policies it deems important. The latest news emphasizes new labeling guidelines established by the new administration. These rules touch those of us in the food industry and I am curious to know your views. As a consumer, I find great value in the new effort to identify where products are coming from - I believe the supply chain should be transparent to the end user. As a business professional in the food industry, I can see an… Continue

Restaurant Gift Card Programs

Posted on September 26, 2008 at 7:08am 9 Comments

I've worked successfully on these programs for several independent and chain restaurants. Given the economy and that we're all looking for new ways to drive customers into restaurants... take another look at how this works:

Is your gift card program working for you? Do you have a gift card program? Is it creating loyalty and incrementally driving new customers to your restaurant, or are you spinning your wheels trying to figure out how to meet minimum card runs with your… Continue

Labeling law to protect against cloning risk

Posted on January 28, 2008 at 6:18am 0 Comments

The following article describes how the state of California is reacting to the recent FDA claim that food and dairy products from cloned animals are safe for human consumption. Should other states jump on California's band wagon? What does this mean for the FDA's integrity and future as the authority on US Food Supply?

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the connection and great insight. You're definitely right, but I suppose there always has to be two sides to every topic, especially when it comes to legislation. I definitely see empowering customers to make healthy eating choices and informing them as a strong marketing tool and a way to keep the industry "honest." At the same time, I could see how restaurants would oppose menu labeling, especially with continually having to update menus and not knowing the resources there are out there. I will definitely be taking a look at your blogs today. Look forward to talking to you more!
