Re: Why Are Restaurant Operators Such a Hard Sell?

Posted on March 11, 2010 at 7:24am 4 Comments

I just read Michael's post called "Why Are Restaurant Operators Such a Hard Sell?" He was talking about how resistant restaurant operators are to adopt new technology and processes.

That really got me thinking about the very question he asked. Why is it that way? I have a theory, let me know what you think.

Are you a social media slave?

Posted on October 26, 2009 at 9:04am 1 Comment

Miley Cyrus left Twitter because she felt like a social media slave and I certainly felt like one last week as my to do list kept bugging me that I haven't blogged in a while.

No one ever said it was easy to do this social media thing, but I think it's especially challenging for businesses. I try to blog once a week. If I have ideas during the week, I just pop them into a folder and then when "blogging… Continue

Doing the "right" thing (and getting fired for it)

Posted on August 31, 2009 at 8:14am 4 Comments

Operating a business is challenging. I've managed software companies and restaurants and there was never a shortage of difficult decisions to make. I want to share a story about a choice I made, how it cost me my job, and how I was rewarded for it.

I was managing a restaurant near Rockefeller Center in New York City many years ago. It was the first week of December and business was crazy (as it always is that time of year). The owner came in to visit and dropped a bombshell on me. He… Continue

Where do parents take their kids to eat?

Posted on August 19, 2009 at 7:16am 6 Comments

USA Today published an article yesterday about how IHOP and other restaurants are trying to lure in parents by letting kids eat free. Now this is not a discussion about the power of free. It's just a look at dining from a parent's perspective.

Is Pizza Hut's iPhone app a success?

Posted on August 4, 2009 at 7:37am 3 Comments

The Pizza Hut iPhone app has been downloaded over 100,000 times. What does this mean for them? How will it affect their sales? How do I get an app for my restaurant? These are the questions that come to mind.

Well first things first. It's a great looking app. The design team that put it together did an excellent job. It's sexy, fun, and functional.

So what does a great looking app get you? Well, it gets you 100,000 downloads.… Continue

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?
