Appell Pie Jan. 2011

Back to school

I recently received an email from one of our readers who is a professor in a  Hospitality program at a college in the South Florida area. I began reading the letter and began to sweat and shake at the same time.  As I read further the sweating got worse. Why, you ask?  Keep reading!

I was being asked to be a guest speaker in the class he taught about purchasing.  At first I was surprised to be asked to speak on a…

I’m mad as Hell!

Posted on November 7, 2009 at 1:51pm 0 Comments

I recently got a statement for one of my credit cards and found that the interest rate was raised by ten points to seventeen percent. I called the bank to find out why and was told that there was nothing they could do to lower the rate. The bank is also the bank I use for my business checking and I threatened them with pulling my account of over fifteen years. They still would not budge. My FICA score had not changed and their response was that it is an across the board change including the… Continue

Don’t Look Back.......Appell Pie Sept. 2009

“Try explaining Twitter to a 40 year old. The best way I think of it is it is like a bull horn over the internet. You can broadcast a message to anyone who is listening (following) via the internet. Hell it took me a year to really figure out how and why to use it and I deal with technology everyday.” How’s that for an opening? I didn’t say it, it was written by Andrew Fickert, who is the CEO of CommunityMenu .com on a Social Network… Continue

Holiday Remembrance

Appell Pie June 2009

I was born many years ago on Memorial Day when it was celebrated on May 30th. My parents used to take me to a parade on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn New York to commemorate the day and tell me the parade was for my birthday. I never put the true meaning of the day in its proper place until last week. I’ll get back to that later.

My experiences in the military are very tame and safe compared to the millions of soldiers who have fought and been disabled… Continue

Advertise For What?

Posted on March 29, 2009 at 7:39am 4 Comments

Are you spending your hard-earned money on advertising to grow your business in this difficult economy? Do you expect results? Are you getting results? Is the result of your advertising increased sales and a positive attitude toward your product? It should be!

The biggest waste of money is to advertise and not be able to turn the leads into a sale. Let me give you a couple of examples that happened to me recently. I needed a dentist for an emergency. (My regular dentist was not… Continue

No problem. It might be my computer/network as well.

Things are very stagnant in the alternative funding world. You would think that with the access to capital being limited it would be booming. It's really not from my perspective. What I hear from most (not all) business owners is that they are just plain holding off on expansion and improvements until they get a better idea of where this economy is heading. Many are just plain holding on. I can't say I blame them. Why leverage your assets and go into debt without a clear picture?

I have another part time business I started this year that makes more sense for my connections on FohBoh. It just appeals to a more broad audience than alternative funding. I will be concentrating my efforts there from now on with FohBoh. I have made a point to participate more in all of my social media endeavours.

I can't wait to hear about your new project. Best of luck!

Hey Howard - hope things are going well with the new GA issue. Also, loading your page caused my browser to freeze twice, Is there some kind of video that runs when you land here? It may be causing others to have the same problem. I had an error message pop up on my third try and asked if I wanted to stop running scripts.. I clicked yes and then I was fine. Just an FYI.

Take care!

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Michel Laberge: How synchronized hammer strikes could generate nuclear fusion - Michel Laberge (2014)

Our energy future depends on nuclear fusion, says Michel Laberge. The plasma physicist runs a small company with a big idea for a new type of nuclear reactor that could produce clean, cheap energy. His secret recipe? High speeds, scorching temperatures and crushing pressure. In this hopeful talk, he explains how nuclear fusion might be just around the corner.

TED: Sarah Lewis: Embrace the near win - Sarah Lewis (2014)

At her first museum job, art historian Sarah Lewis noticed something important about an artist she was studying: Not every artwork was a total masterpiece. She asks us to consider the role of the almost-failure, the near win, in our own lives. In our pursuit of success and mastery, is it actually our near wins that push us forward?

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" positioned 50,000 km from a telescope to enable imaging of planets about distant stars. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."
