ABOUT DEVAGI SANMUGAM
With a string of accolades that is as eclectic and imaginative as her recipes - cookbook author, food columnist, cooking instructor, entrepreneur and professional bon vivant - Devagi Sanmugam, is one of Singapore's most dynamic and talented food personalities. Whether she is concocting recipes for her latest project or conducting cooking classes for budding chefs, her contagious enthusiasm transforms ordinary meals into dining adventures.
Devagi Sanmugam's career began 26 years ago in her kitchen, as a cooking instructor with a penchant for whipping up recipes. Her unique approach to cooking and her flair for creating recipes that cut across a range of cuisines quickly endeared her to a loyal following. Not looking back since, she has been at the forefront of Singapore's burgeoning culinary scene.
Known widely today as the 'Spice Queen' of Singapore, Devagi has also proven to be an inspiring cookbook author with 16 cookbooks under her belt - The South Indian Cookbook, Great Bakes No Eggs, North Indian Cooking, Sambals, Dips and Marinades, Indian Breads and Rice Dishes, Indian Homestyle Cooking and Naturally Speaking Indian – Home Remedies and Recipes and several others. She has also co-authored Cooking with Asian Leaves, Cooking with Asian Roots, Fun with Asian Food and Cool Bananas and Hot Potatoes.
Her recipes and articles have been and are being featured in several magazines and newspapers.
Unceremoniously thrust into the international food show circuit, Devagi Sanmugam has also appeared on TV cooking programmes in the UK, Australia, US, India, Japan, and on numerous radio stations all over the world. Over the years, she has conducted cooking workshops in San Francisco, Texas, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Colombo and most recently Sweden; where she taught chefs from all over Europe the finer points of Asian cuisine.
In Singapore, Devagi appeared in an English 13-episode CHEF ON CALL cooking program on Mediaworks Channel and Enna Suvai Enna Ragasiyam and Aasai Aasaiyai Cooking For Love, Tamil cooking programs on Vasantham Central for a total of 26 episodes. From September 2005 Devagi is the Resident Chef of the Asian Food Channel, a 24-hour food channel. Devagi was also the consultant for a Malay cooking show on Suria Channel – “Soo………Lazat” which won the Pesta Perdana 2007’s Best Info-Ed Program Award! She had also been interviewed on many other info-ed and cooking programs.
An accomplished authority on the local food scene, she is constantly involved in developing and testing original recipes and formulas for food companies and restaurants. Devagi continues to provide educational experiences through lectures and demonstrations at her own home based cooking school – Epicurean Kitchen and to country clubs, recreational associations, schools and corporate bodies. She has also organized and judged cooking competitions and participated in culinary events.
She donates her time occasionally to community services too. At the beginning of January 2005, Devagi flew down to India on her own initiative and cooked for over 2000 Tsunami victims daily for 10 days.
Devagi is the managing director of Devagi’s Epicurean World Pte Ltd. From July 2005 to July 2006 , Devagi was also the Culinary Consultant for NTUC Fairprice supermarkets chain. Devagi is also the owner of Devagi’s Restaurant & Café.
