Sold our restaurant, built a website...

Posted on November 11, 2008 at 8:38pm 1 Comment

Hey guys,

I have been pretty inactive on FOHBOH. We have successfully sold our restaurant (a huge feat in this economy), and have been evaluating our options.

My partners and I have been thinking about how we can help out other restaurant owners. The biggest problem we encountered was being able to communicate in effective, inexpensive ways with our loyal and local customers about specials and promotions to keep them coming back.

We wasted so much money on "dead… Continue

Diet.com has a SMS nutrition service...

Posted on February 21, 2008 at 10:41am 0 Comments

Diet.com wants your patrons to text them your restaurant name and menu item so that they can reply with nutritional information. Of course the big chains will be added to the service, but the question is do you want to add your restaurant? Could this be a beneficial marketing aspect?

Try it yourself at http://diet.com/mobile/

They provide you contact info to submit your menu items. Let me know how it goes if any of you give it a shot.

Advertise your restaurant *within* Google Maps!

Posted on January 31, 2008 at 2:10pm 3 Comments

For about the last week or so, we have been experimenting with using Google Adwords embedded inside Google Maps. The typical CPC (cost per click) Google Adwords campaign is extremely expensive to run. Try to be one of the top sponsored results for "pizza" or "…

Using Facebook with results within expectations...

Posted on January 28, 2008 at 11:38am 10 Comments

We have had a facebook profile for several weeks now.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1010831635

We experimented with several uses:

Job Opporunities: Using the facebook marketplace, we posted our open positions and had a couple of decent candidates apply.

Facebook only promotions: If someone came in and said that they found us on Facebook, we would give them…

Just read about your new concept and checked out the site. If an operator embeds the calendar on his own website, do his visitors see him AND his competitors? If so, does that seem to bother operators?

Hey David,

thanks for adding me as a friend and for joining the LSM group. Feel free to jump right in and make posts on the group list like the Facebook post. If everyone that belonged to the group would make 1 post like that on the group for all of our benefit, we'd soon have a rich and vibrant LSM program for each of our concepts.

I'm looking forward to sharing with and learning from you along with the rest of the group.

Have the best Tuesday of your life!

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - Matthew Carter (2014)

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books -- remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.

TED: Jeremy Kasdin: The flower-shaped starshade that might help us detect Earth-like planets - Jeremy Kasdin (2014)

Astronomers believe that every star in the galaxy has a planet, one fifth of which might harbor life. Only we haven't seen any of them -- yet. Jeremy Kasdin and his team are looking to change that with the design and engineering of an extraordinary piece of equipment: a flower petal-shaped "starshade" that allows a telescope to photograph planets from 50,000 kilometers away. It is, he says, the "coolest possible science."

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.
