Darren Miles joined Caribou Coffee Co. in January of 2005 and currently serves as Sr. Director of Operations for retail operations in the Upper Midwest of the United States. In this capacity Miles oversees operations, strategy and leadership of 120 Caribou Coffee locations in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri. In his tenure he has led a group including Regional Training, Regional HR, Multi-Unit Managers, Store Managers and Team Members in delivering consistent business excellence, revenue growth and memorable customer experiences. Working closely with Human Resources, Miles has a successful track record of developing talent within the organization and has helped many middle managers and team members on his team realize their potential and achieve additional responsibility or promotion. He is a Regional leader who is highly involved in strategic planning, brand management and new product testing and implementation, leading the way for successful introduction of new food, beverage and coffee menu items now supported system wide. In the area of new business development, Miles has helped select, plan, construct and ultimately open & operate over 60 Caribou Coffee locations in 6 new markets, working closely with and in a leadership capacity beside Marketing, Real Estate, Training, Product Procurement and Store Development to deliver convenient, highly visible retail locations that offer consistently excellent products and memorable customer experiences to thousands of Caribou loyalists.
Prior to joining Caribou Coffee Co, Miles has held various Regional leadership positions in the restaurant industry, including Regional Territory Manager for Ruth’s Chris Steak House Co. leading restaurant operations for 6 locations in Minnesota, Kansas, Ohio and Texas, as well as Director of Operations for Rainforest Café, a casual dining and entertainment concept held by Landry’s Restaurants, operating hundreds of locations representing 27 brands.
Miles most recently worked as a member of Target Corporation, within Marshall Fields Department Stores and served as Corporate Operations Manager for their Foods Division, providing leadership for 35 locations that represented several branded concepts of restaurant, deli and QSR operations. Brands he successfully helped develop and/or led include the world famous Walnut Room in Chicago, IL, The Oak Grill, Seven on State, The Marketplace Café, The Boundary Waters Grill, Fruigert, Starbucks, Wraps and several Marshall Fields Marketplace locations. During his tenure there he developed, from the initial idea and concept, menu development, brand definition through construction and operation, a new fine dining concept for the company called The Lakeshore Grill, which now operates in 5 locations across 3 states under the Macy’s parent.
Miles is a member of the National Restaurant Association, The Minnesota Restaurant Association and Hospitality Minnesota. In 2003 Miles was elected President of the Minnesota Restaurant Association and served on its Board of Directors from 1998 until 2005, also serving as Vice President, Treasurer and Committee Chair for Government Affairs, Membership, Political Action and Education during his tenure. Miles also served on the Board of Directors of Hospitality Minnesota from 2000 to 2004.
Miles is an alumnus of South East Missouri State University, Saint Louis University as well as the Seagram’s School of Wine and Hospitality.
Miles resides in Edina, MN with his wife Danielle their three children. He enjoys family & friends, reading, golf, cycling, skiing, dining and travel.
