Hi Annie,
I was driving by your place yesterday on my way to a meeting and realized I hadn't replied. We've had success with different forms of social media. As you know there's more than Twitter or Facebook. Meetup and blogging have paid off nicely. With Twitter we're using some new technology that allows us to use Twitter to obtain opt in email signups, text message signups and push back redeemable coupons through bar codes, which we send in email, post on Facebook or send via mobile. This way we can track the return on our efforts. Twitter as a standalone is not so great. It needs to be integrated into other channels. When done in conjunction with web and email, Twitter can be great for contests-people seem to respond very well to those.
I received your comment. I'm working at Sel de la Terre restaurant on Boylston St. We offer various promotions throughout the week, the latest of these has been a Twitter promotion where customers receive a discount on our lunch special if they follow us on Twitter. I'm not sure if it has had much success yet and I do not know ways to track its success except by seeing people who retweet messages, @reply us, etc. If you have any suggestions for a restaurant using social media I'd be very happy to hear them!
