Inner City Volunteer Chef

Posted on June 28, 2009 at 4:18pm 0 Comments

Well hello fellow foodies.

I was so lucky in my food career and now I am settling down in Akron/Kenmore Ohio as a Volunteer Chef. "First Glance" started a great Teen Center and now one whole floor devoted to teen moms and down the road a teen home.

Last tuesday was the first day in the new teen mom area and the kitchen is mine. We will also have a full commercial kitchen one floor up for a future catering business I will run.

I need feedback, input, advice and… Continue

I had not logged on here for a long time and remember when it was just a new site.....well you have done well. I am just getting back into the working world again and since I am a foodie I wanted to try to make some connections here at FOHBOH.

I will be relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio in a few weeks. I would love to find a small Mom & Pop restaurant that would enjoy my down home cooking and my restaurant attributes. I'm not looking for big pay just an honest weeks pay and in… Continue

Value Of A Restaurant?

Posted on April 23, 2008 at 3:47pm 4 Comments

How do you determine the value of an independent restaurant or to be more exact a coffee house?

The actual real property is on a 5 year lease, the cafe is equipped with albeit small, a full commercial kitchen. There is also a very nice large mobile kitchen to compliment the whole package.

I know the average daily gross and the owner will show us the books but he is open to lease or sell and wants us to make him an offer. The business runs fine as is but the owner wants to be… Continue

How do you turn a Coffee House into a Small Foodie Cafe?

Posted on April 8, 2008 at 3:56am 3 Comments

Yesterday we had a great afternoon with a potential partner that owns/operates a small coffee house. This gentleman roasts his own beans and has a nice small business with a drive up window and the usual muffins, cookies but not much at all for food. There is a full restaurant(albeit small)kitchen not being used. He also has a full mobile kitchen not being used at all so that would be part of this deal. My chef partner and I love doing fairs/festivals and concessions and this would be perfect… Continue

We really look for experience in both management and restaurants but have hired candidates with one experience in only one of the categories.
We do not usually have much lunch business, with the exception of our downtown locations, so our managers work primarily dinner and late night shifts.
Hope this information helps!

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?

TED: David Sengeh: The sore problem of prosthetic limbs - David Sengeh (2014)

What drove David Sengeh to create a more comfortable prosthetic limb? He grew up in Sierra Leone, and too many of the people he loves are missing limbs after the brutal civil war there. When he noticed that people who had prosthetics weren’t actually wearing them, the TED Fellow set out to discover why — and to solve the problem with his team from the MIT Media Lab.
