Leveraging a Bird Poop Situation

There are a lot of things I don't know.  There's one thing I do know.  This is the first time I've used "poop" in a blog headline.   I went to the car wash yesterday.  It was around 7:00pm and this time of year it's dusk.  My Father-In-Law was kind enough to lend us his car and I wanted to return it all shiny and clean, hence my last minute trip to the car wash.  I've been in Dallas for a little over a year and I will tell you they take their car washing seriously.  This car wash is branded…See More

Summer Camp Withdrawals

That’s what I’m having.  It’s bound to happen.  I spend 3 months getting pumped for what I consider to be the best event of the year.  Followed by 3 days on a high without a drop of alcohol (well maybe a beer or 2…). Then Summer Camp comes to an end. The withdrawals I’m experiencing are different than one might expect.  My withdrawals are laced with inspiration and excitement.  It’s like I was just exposed to this supernatural energy source and the molecules in my mind, body and soul were…See More

Started my career by working for the Rat - the original Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time Theatre based in Sunnyvale Ca, then it was on to Denny's, Inc. in SoCal where I signed up as a Regional Marketing Manager. Denny's was purchased by Spartan Foods and I was relocated to Spartanburg SC as Marketing Director. After that I went to work for one of Applebee's most successful franchisees - Thomas &King, Inc. based in Lexington KY. After 14 years there I left to start my own consulting business.

The Brand Gap

Posted on May 26, 2012 at 10:31am 0 Comments

I have spent a lot of time thinking about a restaurant company’s worst nightmare - The Brand Gap.  Executives work hard to evolve their brands.  Some need a complete make over.  Others continue to tweak and tinker to make sure their brands remain relevant in an ever-changing marketplace.  They spend hours in meetings reviewing research, analyzing data and conducting focus groups trying to ensure their concept has a point of difference that resonates with consumers.…

Why I Wish I Lived In Cleveland!

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 4:30pm 1 Comment

At times I feel displaced.  I spent my first 18 years in one town then I started my life as a ping pong ball.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved my life and wouldn’t trade my experiences for the world.

After high school it was 4 years in Ashland Ohio for…

Birthdays Are The Best!

Ah yes, I just turned another page on the birthday calendar.  I’m working really hard to avoid the trite, worn out sayings like, “Time flies when you are having fun” or “It beats the alternative” or “If I knew I was going to live to be this old I would’ve taken better care of myself”.  I know I’m a sap – birthdays matter to me.

Once, when I turned 30-something I missed a birthday.  Actually the birthday occurred but nobody I was with that day…

I wanted to personally invite you to join our discussions in regards to cheeses at the Cheese Group on FohBoh. Every week we introduce a new cheese and invite you to find it in your area, buy it, try it and then dicuss it with us. We could use someone like yourself who could give us some good, positive feedback.

TED TALKS VIDEO

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?

TED: David Sengeh: The sore problem of prosthetic limbs - David Sengeh (2014)

What drove David Sengeh to create a more comfortable prosthetic limb? He grew up in Sierra Leone, and too many of the people he loves are missing limbs after the brutal civil war there. When he noticed that people who had prosthetics weren’t actually wearing them, the TED Fellow set out to discover why — and to solve the problem with his team from the MIT Media Lab.

TED: Louie Schwartzberg: Hidden miracles of the natural world - Louie Schwartzberg (2014)

We live in a world of unseeable beauty, so subtle and delicate that it is imperceptible to the human eye. To bring this invisible world to light, filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg bends the boundaries of time and space with high-speed cameras, time lapses and microscopes. At TED2014, he shares highlights from his latest project, a 3D film titled "Mysteries of the Unseen World," which slows down, speeds up, and magnifies the astonishing wonders of nature.
