Personal Quote
" If you ate pasta and antipasto, would you still be hungry?"
I have always been a major foodie, so I got incredibly lucky when my marketing career landed me in the foodservice biz.

I received my BA in Philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2007. I got a job with, a restaurant equipment and supply distributor, pretty much right out of college, and have had an absolute blast the whole time. I really enjoy working for a company that actually values providing an educational resource for the foodservice industry. We currently have the largest free Foodservice Education Center on the net, and are constantly trying to provide our customers with all the tools they need to successfully start a restaurant.

Last August, I became a LEED AP (which means I'm certified to provide consulting for sustainable buildings) because I saw a major gap between the owners and operators of restaurants who were interested in green and the people who are experts in the "green" field. I just wanted to help restaurateurs have a better understanding of what they can do to be more eco-friendly, and at the same time, actually save some money by doing so. With that in mind, I helped found the Certified Green Commercial Kitchen program to take people through the steps of environmentally friendly practices. I have been featured in several magazines for this endeavor, including Business Week, and have had the opportunity to travel around the country talking about the program. I continue to help restaurants take the steps to go green.

I've had a crazy ride in the foodservice industry and am always looking forward to the next step!!!

Last Night One Restaurant Made Me A Customer For Life: Some Brief Reflections

Posted on June 26, 2009 at 9:45am 6 Comments

As a marketer, I usually think in terms of planned events, promotions, and how to effectively reach your target demographics, but yesterday, I happened upon a wonderful reminder of why sometimes it is better to put all your "marketing plans" and "PR promotions" and "Advertising" off to the side for a moment and just let your own personal passions shine through naturally in your restaurant.

Before I begin, I should mention that I am a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. He pretty much defined… Continue

Viral Marketing: Part I

Posted on June 18, 2009 at 12:12pm 0 Comments

Viral marketing is one of the hot topics in online marketing right now, though it is not a technique that is exclusive to online promotions. While this technique has always existed, the advent of social media has exponentially increased your ability to get noticed. For those of you who've never heard the term, viral marketing refers to a marketing campaign that spreads naturally through word of mouth (or links across the web). If used correctly viral marketing can be one of the powerful… Continue

Marketing Your Eco-Friendly Restaurant...Without Greenwashing!

Posted on June 10, 2009 at 10:32am 4 Comments

Eco-friendly restaurants are the hot-button topic in the foodservice industry at the moment. The general public is getting increasingly knowledgeable about concepts like energy efficiency, water conservation, biodegradables, and green cleaning and have started trying to incorporate these into their daily lives. However, as this movement progresses, more and more companies are trying to market themselves as green, and customers are getting weary. Here are some ways to market a legitimately green… Continue

No, thank you for sharing that wonderful story. It was a selfless marketing move that I'm sure the owner doesn't even realize how affective it was. If the company I work for was mine, I would have followed suit. The power of music. It really is magical. Have a great 4th of July!

Hello Ashley, pleasure to chat with you! How is the weather in Colorado? it is hot down here in Florida, the thermometer showed 102 F. yesterday! add the humidity to that you get a really sticky situation!
I am glad you asked about WoWGreen International, the products are unbelievable, totally safe, non-toxic, PH neutral and they really work!
WoWGreen found a formula to compose a perfect balance by mixing the right enzymes for the right job, there are 153 Enzymes in these products that are acting just like little packman! The natural surfactants are loosening the dirt by drowing it in the air then the enzymes go and eat it all up!
That is basically the way it works.
We are on a mission trying to free homes, business and foodservice establishments of toxic, harmful chemicals!
and the best part of it is that you get paid "green" to go "green"!
Please go to my website at to read more about it.
for any specific questions you may have please e-mail me!

Regards Ulrich

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for the complement. Your blog on "Marketing Your Eco-Friendly Restaurant...Without Greenwashing!" has great resources with it. I just finished a restaurant in North Carolina that focused more on "being green". It's a long road and a lot of hard work to keep it heading in the right direction. Good to know that your specialty is in marketing these companies correctly. Maybe our paths will cross on a project.

TED: Hamish Jolly: A shark-deterrent wetsuit (and it's not what you think) - Hamish Jolly (2013)

Hamish Jolly, an ocean swimmer in Australia, wanted a wetsuit that would deter a curious shark from mistaking him for a potential source of nourishment. (Which, statistically, is rare, but certainly a fate worth avoiding.) Working with a team of scientists, he and his friends came up with a fresh approach — not a shark cage, not a suit of chain-mail, but a sleek suit that taps our growing understanding of shark vision.
