Suggestive Selling our best and worst friend...

Suggestive Selling is something we all try to train our FOH people on so they can not only increase their check averages that we pain stakingly track but also hopefully make them a little more money. I started with Applebee's as a Server and Expo. As I continued with the company I was developed into a completely cross-trained Associate who was also a certified Apple Elite for The Rose Group. I then moved into Management with the company and finally came to rest in the Corporate Office as the HR/Training Specialist.

I now work with all of the Managers in the system, hourly Associates, and Executive Operators. I work with both Human Resources and Training Departments to help bridge the two with alignment.

Reality is closing in on me...

Posted on January 8, 2009 at 1:56pm 0 Comments

As much as I try to stay abreast of the current topics of our country and the economy there is also a part of me that continues to defy that anything is really wrong. I feel that if I feed into the hype, then I am just one more person with the 'wool pulled over their eyes' and will get sucked into the drama! I have always tried to be a Sheep Hearder, not a sheep...however recently-this week-reality has been closing in on me quickly...almost as an omen that maybe I shouldn't be so… Continue

Old School BH 90210 OR The New BH 90210???

Posted on September 4, 2008 at 5:08am 53 Comments

This is totally admitting that I have a secret addiction to Beverly Hills 90210...and I am prepared to come out of the closet and admit that every Saturday morning I lay around (if I can) and watch all those old episodes of 90210 that I grew up watching on a weekly basis. Much to my brother's dismay we faithfully tuned in weekly to see who Brenda was going to hurt next, is Dylan dating Kelly or Brenda and is Donna ever going to sleep with David. Oh yes, the good old days when this was about as… Continue

Finding the time for "the important stuff"

Posted on August 5, 2008 at 1:58pm 0 Comments

Part of my job includes doing an internal audit on our associate files to ensure both legal and training compliance. Not the most glamorous part of my job description, but, a necessary one none the less. From the time I started to complete this through today I feel that I have provided a necessary education to our managers on the 'ins and outs' of paperwork, time, and organization.

I make it a personal goal to never make them feel stupid or so horrible that they feel nothing can be… Continue

Staying Ahead of the Curve....Without Losing Your Mind...

Posted on July 30, 2008 at 9:00am 0 Comments

So, how does your team stay ahead of the training curve? Do you develop new programs roll them out and let them go? Do you partner with your leaders for buy in before you put together programs? Do you ask you people the programs are meant to target what they are looking for?

I know that this is the age old question! Each team has a different dynamic with different working parts and different means ($$) of getting their… Continue

Hi Amanda!
I am a producer in LA... I work with a bunch of the local casual dining restaurants here in So Cal. to create training (and marketing) videos (Corporate HQ's). Just found FOHBOH and its a pretty cool site. Thought I would start to build my contacts. :) If you'd be interested, I could send you my demos. Would love to do some work for Rosegroup! :)
Talk to you soon.

Hi Amanda,

I truly appreciate you taking the time to head on over to the site and adding a restaurant. I too look forward to seeing the site grow in the coming months and will be forever thankful to those who made it happen in the first place.

Thanks again

Hi Amanda,

I've just launched a new website called where the idea is to try as many different types of food from around the world in your local area and I was wondering whether you'd go and have a look, see what you think and perhaps give me some feedback. And if you like it, I'd really appreciate it if you'd start adding a few restaurants that you know of in your area.

Thanks so much

They can't seem to get anybody from the old cast, back. I think her appearances were to jump start the nostalgic
look back. Shannen D, I think needs the job.

Just a guess, I really don't know.

TED: Norman Spack: How I help transgender teens become who they want to be - Norman Spack (2013)

Puberty is an awkward time for just about everybody, but for transgender teens it can be a nightmare, as they grow overnight into bodies they aren't comfortable with. In a heartfelt talk, endocrinologist Norman Spack tells a personal story of how he became one of the few doctors in the US to treat minors with hormone replacement therapy. By staving off the effects of puberty, Spack gives trans teens the time they need. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

TED: Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar - Jennifer Senior (2014)

The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

TED: David Brooks: Should you live for your résumé ... or your eulogy? - David Brooks (2014)

Within each of us are two selves, suggests David Brooks in this meditative short talk: the self who craves success, who builds a résumé, and the self who seeks connection, community, love -- the values that make for a great eulogy. (Joseph Soloveitchik has called these selves "Adam I" and "Adam II.") Brooks asks: Can we balance these two selves?

What drove David Sengeh to create a more comfortable prosthetic limb? He grew up in Sierra Leone, and too many of the people he loves are missing limbs after the brutal civil war there. When he noticed that people who had prosthetics weren’t actually wearing them, the TED Fellow set out to discover why — and to solve the problem with his team from the MIT Media Lab.
