I have a love-hate relationship with restaurants that have the calorie content right up there next to the menu item (think Panera and some KFC's that I've seen).  The worst is McDonalds... They let you order blind, then have stats on…

Cutting Calories in Artisan Sandwiches

Fresh baked bread, imported meats, house-made spreads...what’s not to love about an artisan sandwich?  Well, the calorie count may be an issue to some people.  With New Years and Resolutions just around the corner it’s not a bad idea to start thinking about ways to cut calories for those diners on a weight loss mission.  Sandwiches provide an easy platform to make simple changes that will lower their fat and calorie contents.  Here are some ideas to help get started: Wrap it up:  Bread is big,…See More

Happy Holiday Season!

Posted on December 1, 2011 at 7:18am 5 Comments

Today marks the start of December, and the countdown to Christmas.  To get us into the holiday spirit I have compiled a list of some of our favorite holiday treats and of course their calorie counts.

Eggnog, a sweetened dairy-based holiday drink made with cream, eggs,…

Different Diners, Different Dietary Needs

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 7:07am 1 Comment

No two diners are the same, but like any groups, different styles of diners may have similar nutrition needs during dining.  Here are some of the groups and trends that I have observed:

The Business Lunch Crowd:

  • Who they are:  If you operate in a metro area you know them well.  Smartly dressed, they either come in to grab a quick desk meal, or come in and sit down for a business lunch/meeting.  Whether in a group or on their own, one thing is…

Nutrition on Hotel Menus

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 5:00pm 0 Comments

A few years ago the National Restaurant Association reported that48% of the average American household food budget is spent dining out.  That’s pretty high for an average, but some of us eat out far more than the average person, in particular those of us on the road.  Those of you who I see around the restaurant trade show circuit know what I am talking about; eating three meals a day (at least, sometimes there are happy hours and parties) either in…

Evaluating America’s Top 10 Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants

Posted on October 19, 2011 at 3:00pm 0 Comments

I recently stumbled upon this article from Health magazine: America’s Top 10 Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants.  As a secret lover of fast food (a treat that I only enjoy on road trips) I was intrigued. Surprisingly, there were more restaurants listed that I haven’t I have never even heard of, much less visited.

Time to investigate.

Hello Alyson, thank you for the nice comment on my graphic design work for restaurants. It was a long overdue thank you, I didn't see it. I am continuing to create more restaurant graphics. But I'd also like to commend you on your blog postings that I get. They are informative, thanks. Keep it up. Best, Clovia

Alyson,

We are all beginning to learn how important it is for restaurants to use green products for cleaning. Restaurants are one place where cleanliness and sanitation are essential. Currently most restaurants continue to use products which are toxic to the surrounding environment and unhealthy for customers and employees. At Community Market we offer a wide range of truly green products that you will feel good about using & at a price you will appreciate!

One product is our All Purpose GREEN Cleaning spray:
One spray for all surfaces. One smart solution. This All-Purpose Cleaner whisks away grease, dirt, and grime in one shot, without a trace.

Powers away dirt, grime, and grease without streaking or dulling surfaces.
Dermatologist-tested.
No phosphates, chlorine, or other unpleasant ingredients that could harm the environment.
This is a product you, your employees & customers will appreciate! To learn more about this and other great green cleaning products, please contact us. Make sure to ask how you can buy them at wholesale price!

Alyson, it looks like your group is doing or has done some research related to calories/nutrition/restaurants./obesity.. Interesting. I am currently working on one as well. I've assembled some other research from the milken institute with my own to try and hypothesis on why obeseity has increased, what are the causes of this effect, and what are possible angles to offset those trends. I'll assemble some of the data for you and if you check it out. If you have any good stuff on that focus that please share as well. If you also let me know what areas your working on now, I will keep you posted on anything I run into as well. Nice checking out your message board.

Hi Alyson, the 60% - 85% range is a fairly conservative combination of a few data sets as I felt it was more accurate to provide a range rather than a definitive number. The first source is the AIS Media’s 2007 National Restaurant Consumer Internet Usage Survey, which showed that 89% of people did some form of research online prior to eating out and 57% viewed the restaurant's website prior to dining there. The other source is a tool that Google offers, Google Insights, which displays how many searches have been done for a particular term, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. In 2009, restaurants searches range from 82 - 94. Thanks for your comment!

Look forward to learning more about you and FoodCalc.

Again, my apologies for not replying sooner!
