Howdy,
I am not sure if any of y'all are familiar with the Wine Centry Club but you need to be. This club was started by fello FohBoh'er Steve DeLong. It's one of the great movements in the world of wine. Please take the time to check out this website. Like FohBoh, it's free. Tell your friends, increase awareness, and let's get people away from drinking the 10 or 12 grapes in their "safe zone."

Eric,

I sat down and started the application and from memory, to include the areas from the world that I have drank these grapes from, I am at 130, and still going. I also included 10 varieties that were not listed on there. From Croatia, Hungary and also some Vitis Labrusca varieties. Also a couple such as Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza which are the main varietals in Txakoli from the Basque area of Spain. This is hella fun, thanks for turning me on to it. They will probably have a good freakout over it, but I have this uncanny ability to remember specific details from all the wines I have ever tasted. In the comment section by Carignan and Alicante Bouschet, I mentioned that I had it from Turkey as well as France. I've had about 3500 wines in the past 3 months, never the same one twice and crazy grapes from crazy places. The tasting continues..........
I can verify Edwin's memory. It's pretty scary/funny when he gets his nose in a wine. I should know, about 150+ wines came out of my portfilio, ( between the 2006 Burgundy tasting and the pow-wows up 6 flights of stairs.) I am trying to expand the depth and width of my knowedge, but its harder when you supply the wine, as you work within a certian book. I love it when I get to try other people's wine.
Eric, this is indeed a fabulous program. From talking with tons of wine drinkers over the past 5 years, we find that wine consumers do tend to drink not only the same grape over and over...but the same brand. I try to branch out as much as possible and taste everything that I can find. Still, I was only able to document about 90 varietals on the Wine Century list (10-11 that I added). Still, some of the wines that I am sure I tasted years ago but can not recall I decided not to check off yet until I refresh my palate memory. The fact is, wine lovers who try many wines do expand their palates and are more willing to buy the lesser known varietals in the future...and that is a beautiful thing...
Hello, I just received my certificate from Steve DeLong. This Club is fun and should be recommended to every wine lover. You get to taste at least one hundred wines and once you get started you will want to continue exploring new varietals because it opens your palate to many interesting experiences.
I had a little advantage in this exercise since I import wines from Central-Eastern Europe, i.e. Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia. You'll find an abundance of native grapes here. Check it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised. -frank
