I have been a fan of Dan Phillips for a long time....Has anyone reviewed the recent Green Lion Napa Cab ? Or any of the more recent releases. For that matter has anybody bought a retail wine under $50 that just blew you away....I mean AWAY !
I haven't tried it, but let me say this: I'm reluctant to try many of these new fangled $50 to $100+ wines from Australia because more often than not I find them to be disappointing -- garishly overextracted, oaky, and bitter with tannin. I read the reviews on occasion (because distributors thrust them in your face -- the usual words like "awesome," "huge," "saturated," etc. That's usual a signal to me that the wine isn't going to be very pleasant. My taste is just not the same as most journalists -- I like "silky," "lush," "refined," "elegant" and even "feminine" more than "awesome" and "thick."
But if your taste is for big, thick hefty, oaky Australian reds, by all means spend the $$$ on these new Aussie reds. Just because I hate 'em means nothing. Just means more for you!
I think you missed the ????? The wine in question is far below the $50 mark and obviously you are not familiar with Dan Phillips or his winemaker.....This wine is far from over-oaked or thick...But thanks for trying !
My apologies, as I totally misread your post, thinking you were talking about Dan's high end imports (of which he has aplenty). I also totally missed the fact that you were talking about a Napa Valley wine (since when you say "Grateful Palate," I think Aussie imports).
I'll look for the Green Lion Cabernet, if you say it's a great value. Like you, I've been buying and enjoying Dan Philips' wines for years. BTW, have you tasted the $15 Cabernet and Shiraz made by Dan's old Marquis-Philips partner, the Mollydooker wines made by Sarah and Sparky Marquis? Totally delicious, even if a little oaky.
Alittle more info please......" Miss Harry, Hewitson, Gsm " three different wines ? From where ? What state are you in ? What is the grape ? A blend ? Help !
