When Breakfast Tip turns into Crepe Extortion
This morning the Mrs. and I decided to order a couple of French Crepes from a local place. I called by phone to place the order and the person told me that I'll be charged 15% gratuity automatically. I'm not used to discussing such things while ordering takeout (and in case you're wondering why I wouldn't order via Takeout-Online.com, you're right - I should have, but this is pretty much the only place in town for such food and they haven't evolved yet to the online ordering concept, thus I had to wipe the dust off my phone and force myself into the old technology ways, for which I'm already feeling sorry).
The longer version of this story is on my blog, but I do think it's absolutely ridiculous for a restaurant to demand what they call a 'gratuity' for a takeout order for 2 dishes.
The result was swift and likely permanent - they got their $1.50 from me and... they'll never see me again... as simple as that.
I hope this restaurant wises up and realizes that this was a bad decision on their part, no matter how one wants to examine it.

It's definitely mind-boggling that some restaurants will still charge a gratuity for takeout! It is very rare that any restaurants on our system will charge extra for it.

The reality is that the restaurants, not their vendors (online ordering services like yours or mine) get to determine what their policies are in terms of gratuities. You (as a vendor) can't dictate to your clients what they should or should not do. Perhaps your organization does discriminate based on ethics. We, at Takeout Online, decide to let the clients make their own decisions when it comes to their business. Doesn't mean we always agree with them, but they're our clients and we want to make sure they're satisfied with the service. And, for the record, the incident described wasn't handled by one of our clients.
