A great 'beginning' seminar to cover the basics of social media for bars and restaurants. For new or existing locations Nov. 17th at 10am or 2pm.

This seminar is for you if:

* You own or run a bar or restaurant.
* You know you need to get on the social media bandwagon to market your location more successfully.
* You've heard about tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and LinkedIn.
* You're limited in terms of time, tech skills, and money.

In one hour, you'll learn:

* How social media differs from "traditional" marketing.
* What options are available to you in Portland.
* What to do about the social media tools you can control.
* What to do about the tools you can't control.
* How to post, what to post, and who should post.

And most importantly, how to make it all work together in just 10 minutes per day...if that's all you've got.

Presented by local hospitality social media manager Jennifer Hancox and NTN Buzztime's Brandon Hull.

Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance online, or $35 at the door. http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/135476

Have any restaurants incorporated social media collaboration into recruitment, screening, scheduling or inter-office communication?

Success stories? Horror stories? We want to hear them!

Shortened URL's have come under a cautionary note because they can disguise the names of malicious sites.

Jordan Robertson discusses them on MSNBC.

I have a presentation coming up at MEG and want to share success stories at the restaurant level. Can you all share what you've experienced or heard about what operators are doing?

Foodservice social media begins with understanding behavior. Listening before speaking is something we [should have] learned in elementary school. It's also what's needed before a strategy is created.

Best Aps! I'm looking for some of the most helpful online aps that everyone uses that relate to the restaurant business. I'd like to get them added to my phone!

This is a response from Andrew Baber in reply to my query about his previous comment.

Hey, I could have sworn I replied about the bit.ly and ow.ly sites but I can't find my response.

Basically they are to shorten links. When you try to link a particular article it can be difficult on something like twitter when you are limited to 140 characters.

Another benefit through bit.ly and ow.ly is that they will track clicks on links automatically (as long as you're logged in when you shorten it).

It looks like we need threaded comments for this discussion. Attn: Michael Atkinson(please)

1. Light-box.

This is a very interesting idea, but I'm unclear about how often you mean to use it and how many tweets are to be sent.

One thing I've learned about tweets is the need to NOT flood the recipient(s) with tweets and risk being un-followed.

2. Paz & basic tools.

Great start here, Paul. I agree.

I) I also use WordPress and like it, but there are other options. I would like to see someone with expertise discuss the various blog platforms and talk about the merits and of each.

II) Digital Camera.

Photo editing is essential. I am using Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite, but again there are others available, including some open source applications. Expert input please.

I had the devil of a time learning how to stick a photo into my blog and it took me quite a long time to figure out how to embed a video.

III) Website.

Choosing a style, finding a designer and someone to maintain the site, hosting, registering, and protecting with multiple domain names are some considerations.

Registration of a site is very important. I use GoDaddy because after doing some research I found their reputation to be impeccable and customer service is flawless IMHO.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that when I began this odyssey two years ago the only thing I knew about my PC was where the power button was.

It was truly problematic finding someone to explain the basic mechanics of all of these things, ie. mentor.

I am still a novice, but I am learning. I hope that what we do here will make it easier for others to begin the Social Media journey.
