Restaurant Social Media

The second generation of iPhone software comes with a nifty (did I really just say "nifty") feature called "Apps Store"—free with the upgrade.

Apps Store is a mobile-online shopping mall for iPhone compatible applications that include games (Texas Hold 'Em), news sources (Bloomberg) and yes—restaurant and travel guides.

Some of the apps you have to pay for—to order a Frommer's New York from Modality, it's a minimal price of $9.95. But there's something to be said for the free stuff, namely Urban Spoon.

Another user-generated content site that features restaurant listings and citizen reviews, Urban Spoon has created a fun and practical application for the iPhone where you can use easy-touch-screen technology to select the city you where you want to eat (unless it automatically satellites in the location where you are) and choose the type of cuisine, dollar range and exact location within that city, i.e., Nob Hill, San Franciscso.

The absolute coolest, coolest part of this app is the "Shake" feature, reminiscent of the iPod Shuffle. After selecting the city where you want to eat, all you need to do is shake your phone and the on-screen feature (resembling the three screens of a slot machine), will auto-scroll until it lands on a particular area, dollar sign amount and cuisine—with a listing of a suggested restaurant at the bottom.

After that, you can click on the restaurant and the address, phone number and a link to read reviews will appear. Click on the phone number and you have the option of calling the restaurant. Click on the address and your maps feature will map it for you. (Not sure how the new phones with the new nav features respond).

The only downside is the cities represented are limited so right now, it's only usable in major U.S. or Canadian cities. But users love it as it's gotten excellent reviews—viewable in the Apps Store link.
