Hi everyone. I'm looking for some disposable containers that are environmentally friendly (biodegradable) without having to be composted. I'm getting a good bit of contradictory information and am hoping to get some clarity. Are there any sites or distributors that anyone can recommend? Thanks!

Hi, Tracy,

The Green Restaurant Association has a page that provides links to environmentally friendly products that they endorse.

Check out the Health Care Without Harm website - they have many healthcare foodservice members who are using disposable containers that are eco-friendly. Also, a college foodservice operator recently mentioned a line called Enviroware that is environmentally friendly.
Not sure if you have found what you were looking for yet, but what do you mean by biodegradable without having to be composted?
Solo® makes a brand of cups called Bare® -check out Solocup.com. Also StalkMarket® has a line of eco-friendly tableware including tableware like its PlanetPlus® products and Jaya®, a line made from advanced biopolymers instead of plastic - go to www.stallkmarketproducts.com.
Ideally you will be able to use compostable and the end user will actually compost them.

But recyclable is also good if it gets recycled.

In our test restaurant we have been using a product called Green Wave with very good success for take out and compostable straws made from US gown corn from Eco-Products, unfortunately the straws are made in Taiwan (so much for local) but one step at time and we will get there.

I would recommend that you also look into Green Star Restaurant, for industry specific steps to go-green and to increase your profits at the same time.
Tracy;

Ask your local Sysco rep .. they make or sell a 100% bio-recycled box (brown, with lite wax coating) that is pretty nice and reasonably priced. Good luck.
There is a company called Bio-Select that makes takeout containers that are compostable. Also, Green Wave is a good bet and one of the older, more experienced in this area. The Green Restaurant Association is a good starting point.
This Web page lists a large majority of the companies producing biodegradable foodservice products. You should be able to find what you need there.

Also, the Disposables page has more information on different categories of products.
Hello Tracy,
I'm likewise trying to source disposable containers for use in a mobile food setting. I want to be as green as possible. Let me know if you have any leads.
Thx,
Luc
