Certainly it depends on the restaurant, but overall - which cities/places have you enjoyed the best dim sum experiences? Could be the variety of items, or the ambience. Could your favorite be NYC, San Francisco, Hong Kong? Tell us about your favorite cities, places and why!

If in Portland, OR, check out

Wong's King Seafood
8733 SE Division St
Portland, OR 97266

Great stuff, and was the first place I went after my recent trip to Hong Kong, I caught the dim sum fever!
Sounds delicious! Will check it out next time I'm in Portland - Thanks!
Hong Kong is the home of dim sum and the best can be found at City Hall. It is one of the few that still serve dim sum from carts. This is the way Dim Sum was traditionally delivered, allowing you to simply point at what you want, unfortunately, aside from City Hall this has been phased out in nearly all Hong Kong Dim Sum restaurants. The food here is excellent, however it’s reputation has seen prices creep-up, although the combination of experience and food make it worthwhile. 2nd Floor, City Hall, Central .

In Bangkok experience the essence of provincial Chinese life at Lok Wah Hin, the Chinese restaurant at Novotel Hotel on Siam Square that has been a sanctuary for lovers of Chinese food and Dim Sum in Bangkok for more than 16 years. An all-you-can-eat Dim Sum buffet for 520 baht ($15) per person also includes shark fin soup (Monday to Saturday). Lok Wah Hin was recently refurbished and the result is an exquisite and elegant imperial look.

In KL I suggest Xin at the Concorde Hotel. A must-eat is the stir-fried carrot cake which is made to order at the front of the restaurant, and it's quite delicious. It is radish cakes cut into cubes and stir-fried with eggs, bean sprouts, and green onion, among other things. It is always perfect with lots of char on the "carrot" cake and eggs, bean sprouts retaining a bit of crunch, not too soggy from too much soy. It must be eaten st once while it's still piping hot; sitting does not flatter this dish. Xin, in my opinion, excels at steamed dim sum, especially those involving seafood. Chee cheong fun (rice dough rolls, usually filled and served doused in soy) with scallops is heavenly, and the shrimp enclosed in rice flour dumplings are perfectly cooked to a wee bit "al dente" -- no mushy shellfish here.

Saigon, Vietnam-Dynasty Restaurant, New World Hotel Saigon - Le Lai St, D1 - is still one of the best Chinese restaurants in town. Serves great dim sum for lunch. In Hanoi there are a couple of small dim sum spots but I don't know the names just how to get there. VBG

Yangon, Myanmar The Chinese restaurant in the Chatrium Hotel, Tiger Hill serves the best Cantonese Cuisine and varieties of Dim Sum ever available in Yangon. While enjoying your dim sum you look out at the Hawaiian style tropical pool gardens which is simply unforgettable.

In London Yauatcha located at 15 Broadwick Street, London, W1F 0DL serves dim sum all day and isd a trendy spot. However the favourite of Chinese and those who know dim sum is the Royal China Club at 40-42 Baker Street, London W1U 7AJ. Their dim sum is the best you can find in London at such reasonable prices. Recently, they have opened the Royal China Club to copy the success of Hakkasan. The décor is tasteful unlike the gaudy Royal China chain. The food is of equal quality but with more innovative flair and expensive ingredients (e.g. lobster, abalone, sharks fin).

Now, here is the easy part Dim Sum in the San Francisco area - I live in the San Francisco Bay Area-just 25 miles east of the city. My absolute favourite for dim sum was Harbor Village but it closed. I think their HK branch is still open. We used to eat at the now closed original Yank Sing on Broadway which was excellent. Years ago Yank Sing Restaurant opened at 101 Spear St (One Rincon Ctr) in San Francisco. Pleasant surroundings, friendly staff and while their dim sum is not completely traditional and it's very expensive but a Gweilo favourite with many.

I prefer Koi Palace in Daly City and it probably serves the best dimsum overall. Roast suckling pig, coffee spareribs, steamed cake layered with salted egg filling. . . But have everyone in your party bring noise-cancelling headphones, good music, and a good book if you go on a weekend as dining there can be quite stressful. Conversation will be impossible. High-strung people may need Valium. :-) A lot like Hong Kong dim sum places. Oh and be sure and order the Shanghai Crab Dumplings-soup broth inside a large dumpling-YUM!

Locally we eat Dim Sum at Ten's Tea House in Walnut Creek. They were located in Oakland for many years and moved out here in the sun a few years back. Their selection is huge! They come around with carts, but also have a large menu to order special dim sum items. We love their scallop dumplings, the sesame balls, the lotus leaf sticky rice, etc. Easy to stuff for less than $10 a person. Parking can be a challenge as the lot is tiny but many street spots available. Service is always friendly and attentive.

Vancouver, BC has a plethora of awesome dim sum spots.
In America, I'd say Harmony Palace in Manhattan's chinatown for the least expensive, quality dim sum. Go during the hours of tea time from 11:30am-1:30pm for hot dim sum served on carts. For the best in the world, visit Hong Kong's Floating Palace. They have hundreds of varieties on large tables sectioned off into steamed, fried, etc...
I also make my own Shu Mai and Won Ton and Sui Gao with dough from scratch.
Wow - sounds delicious! I've been to the Jumbo floating restaurant in Aberdeen harbor (Hong Kong Island). Wonderful experience.

Cheers,
Mark
If you are ever in DC Mark's Duck House is great!
