Certainly it depends on the restaurant, but overall - which cities/places have you enjoyed the best dim sum experiences? Could be the variety of items, or the ambience. Could your favorite be NYC, San Francisco, Hong Kong? Tell us about your favorite cities, places and why!

I am a certifiable dim sum fanatic. While I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area most of my life, I came to love Mings in Palo Alto. It is somewhat pricer than those you'll find in Oakland or San Francisco, but the quality (I felt) was consistent and high. I never pass up an opportunity to dine there.
Thanks Ted - I'll have to give Mings a try during my next visit to the Bay Area. We only have a few dim sum places in Atlanta, and none are of the quality you can find in San Francisco or NYC. There is one decent place in Atlanta I can recommend, it's called Oriental Pearl in Chamblee (a suburb of Atlanta). They have a few original items (fried lobster/crab logs) along with the standard fare of Har gow, Lotus leaf rice, Char Syl Bao and Ribs.

Any places to recommend on the upper peninsula?
If I ever find myself in your neck of the woods, I'll definitely check it out. No, as a dim sum lover, I ought to know of more hot spots, huh! I have had good experiences at several other well known spots around the Bay as probably recommended by Zagat or Yelp.
Red Star Restaurant, located in an old estate in Singapore.... authentic, great tasting, value for money dim sum served from traditional push carts... the 1980's decor only serves to enhance the ambience!
Thanks Corrine - I'm planning a trip to Singapore and Indonesia in May. Will check out Red Star restaurant.

Cheers,
Mark
Cool! I'm from Singapore... let me know if you need any tips with planning your trip =)
Ocean Jewels Seafood Restaurant in Flushing, NY has the best Dim Sum in New York, but if you are in Flushing you have to go to Joe's Shanghai down the street they have my favorite item, 福德饮食店, Xiao Long Bao (soupy crab bun).
Cool- I'll be in NYC this weekend. May have to give it a try.

Thanks,
Mark
Mark,

If you are in the city (Manhattan) take the seven train, it will take you to Flushing, it's the last stop (not a long ride). It's another Chinatown, if that's your thing make the time to walk around, if not eat and run. And if you are in the city and you don't have lots of time for lunch and if you're near Chinatown eat at Big Wing Wong Restaurant (on Mott St). It's an experience, it’s mostly a fast food spot for local Asians. By the time you are seated tea is served and they take your order, choose a rice dish (rice with meat); duck, roast pork, bar-b-que pork or chicken (cost $3.50) served in five minutes, you eat and out in ten to fifteen. That is the whole experience. I miss NY now that I just talk about it.

Have fun!

Nee how ma? (pigeon Mandarin)

Actually, I'm staying near Chinatown with one of my best buds Larre Lap Yee (Cantonese). He lives at the corner of Spring and Mulberrry. I've been to Big Wing Wong - may go there again this weekend. We're having dinner tomorrow night with a bunch of friends at Congee Village. I haven't been to the Chinatown in Flushing, but I think Lap's family owns some buildings there. Have you been to Noodletown on Bowery at Bayard? Also a fast spot for locals - great soft shell crab.

Shia Shia,
Mark
If you are ever in Miami - Kon Chau has pretty good dim sum. The restaurant may not look that great, but isn't that where you get some of the best food.
Mark, east of Los Angeles in San Gabriel Valley, is dense with Dim Sum restaurants. Mission 261 is on of the notables, using a check sheet as opposed to rolling it to the table. The owner says this is upscale Hong Kong style.

There are others but I'd have to look up the names and get back to you.
