Once again, Ken Blanchard teaches a valuable lesson through a short story. In Whale Done!, a businessman and family man attends the killer whale show at Sea World and when he sees how well the whales are trained, he speaks to the trainer in an attempt to get some ideas on training his work staff.
By speaking with a few different people, the businessman learns some useful lessons that assist him both at work and at home.
Key points include:
-Building trust with your team
- Accentuating the positive with your team
- Redirecting energy when mistakes occur with the team
The book also discusses a GOTcha response (catching people doing things wrong) versus a WHALE DONE response (catching people doing things right) and the reasons for doing the latter.
The businessman uses the knowledge wisely and turns around the performance of his team as well as improves the communication within his family.
The book is a quick read, as usual, and gives very good points to begin addressing your team/family in a more positive way each day.
