Need a simple, easy BBQ rub and also info on BBQ smoking

I just purchased a small smoker and used it last weekend. I put in mesquite and hardwood charcoal and I cooked some ribs and chicken and used a BBQ rub from Weber. The food was cooked fine but the flavor was waaay too intense from the mesquite. Anyone have any basic advice for a rookie BBQ'er?

Hi all,
Mesquite is a really good word but the wood is way too strong for most applications. More smoke doesn't = better BBQ. Try backing way off on the wood and use a mild flavor like apple or cherry. If it's too mild you'll still have a good dinner and you can add a little more next time.

Thanks Ray, I'll buy the apple or cherry before next BBQ and try that. Appreciate the advice.
Go to HeadCountry.com and buy their All Purpose Championship Seasoning. It is awesome. I have been using it for year.

I have a nice BBQ rub recipe for you. Mild but with great flavor. I'll send it to you tomorrow.
Thanks Bill. Any ideas about which is the best wood to use also?
