Hey now, are there any aspiring wine professionals or sommeliers out there (come on Herve, shoot for number one or two!) that are looking to increase their tasting skills? IT would be neat to get a group together every month or so and practice. Of course we would want to keep this as legal, professional and efficient as possible.
Fully agree Matt that we should stay focused on the task - which is to taste, learn, and expand our palate memory. Since I have not seen a proposal yet - I'd like to suggest that we start with a region that seems to be undervalued by many - Alsace. I am sure that this esteemed audience does not make this undervaluation - however we have to start somewhere. With so many fabulous regions of the world, we could start anywhere...Alsace just seems to be on my mind recently. Any takers? Do we have a place?
Good Afternoon,
My name is Brad Lev I am the owner of LIT.
I would be very interested in hosting this event for everyone once a month or so...
Who ever is in charge of this you can email me atbrad@litkitchen.com
Thanks
Brad
Love the idea everyone! I too very much enjoy "brown bagging" wines, hence no preconceived notions as well as being the most palate educating experience by far. Even if it's the same region or grape sometimes the prestige of a wine skews proper evaluation plus it's nice to be surprised by an off beat/unknown producer. So lets get our drink on people!
I am thinking to get together to taste and may be commit all of us to buy from distributors - DEALS on quantity based on our group. What do you think?
I can host those meetings in Sandy Springs at the Tasting Room.
Herve
Buying wholesale is a good idea if possible but it seems unlikely that we will really need more than 1-2 bottles of any given wine. I'm uncertain that will get us any special deals. For my part, I can pass along wines in my portfolio for wholesale cost. -Matt
Getting wine won't be an issue. I don't see us needing more than two bottles of each wine we would use. No real ned for large purchases. I'll investigate how we can do this legally.
Count me in for the tasting/education certification group. I completed the first exam in the MS program, studying for the Certified, have the CSW in CWE and taught wine to culinary students at AIA. I tried to get a similar group started six months ago but couldn't get sufficient serious interest.
As the new owner of VINE and with a Sommelier on staff, I would love to have a tasting at the restaurant. We host one every wednesday. Come in and let Chris tantalize your palate!
I would be interested. I have been holding a brown bag idea for quite awhile that may really work well in this group. Keeping everyone very objective, professional, but with a twist towards the end. Start with a region. Alsace for starts. Then pick a price range, $15-20. Everyone brings their favorite selection, two of the same label. Both are put in brown paper bags. One on the tasting table. The other on a the prize table. A tasting sheet is given for everyone to rate each of the wines blinded. The one with the best score, is the winner, and the winner gets all the prize bottles. So, one administrator is needed to collect all the bottles at the entry. They mark with a number and bag the bottle. Its a professionals treat. I am in for something fun. BTW: www.tastenetwork.org/Kud... for all the upcoming dinners.
Hey guys...
we have the pouring license, the kitchen and the space. Because we arent a restuarant, we can pick a night to do this that doesnt interfere with a normal restuarant. I would be very interested in doing this.
Thanks
Brad
