I'm currently developing a site (in stealth mode for now) that would enable business owners/managers such as yourselves to negotiate from vendors as a group. As a small business owner, you'd be hardpressed to get a great deal just negotiating on your own unless you're doing MASS volume. But if you were in a buying bloc with 10-20, or more local restaurants, you could start negotiating some great rates like a national/regional chain.
Is this something that you would find useful? What types of vendors would you want to see on the site? What's your preferred method of making large ($1000+) vendor purchases? What types of features would be a must have on the site?
I think this is a great idea . I am a restaurant food sales rep and can't understand why more people dont do this . For reference look at the NSA . National Supermarket Association . They started out in NY owning Bodegas/Delis , 2 owners joined forces to get better prices then 3&4& so on ,and now they are a chain of 19 huge supermarkets in New York , all individually owned , but they all buy together and get unbelievable prices because of volume . What i would suggest is to have both local independant and corporate vendors on your site that can supply 5,000 or more products (food ,paper ). Makes things easier for the owners when they can have 2 suplliers for their entire place instead of 6-10 . Having 2 also keeps both parties honest and for you would give you better leverage when your dealing with the same suppliers over and over , and of course for New York and New Jersey add me :)
Thanks Daniel for the feedback. My main background is in healthcare where almost all hospitals are part of some group buying organization. This model hasn't yet been adopted by all industries though.
Restaurant owners who don't particularly want to join an official association might find an open platform like this appealing alternative to NSA you mentioned .
I'd like to shoot you a few more questions to flesh out what you'd need as a sales rep to make this site useful to your team. We have a few sales tracking and bid management tools that we'd like to launch with the site as well.
