Restaurant Social Media
"Social media marketing"- using social networking platforms to market your product". I think this is a fairly accurate and short description of what I view social media marketing to be. The problem to me is that there are so many different descriptions that I am really struggling with and creating an all encompassing definition that is short and to the point is extremely challenging. That being said the idea of SMM is only getting more and more complex as new ideas arise and it becomes even more challenging to define. If we break down the words in social media marketing and define them:
1) Social- the interaction of organisms with one another (very short version)
2) Media- a term used to summarize communication delivery tools
3) Marketing- the way companies create interest in their products or services
So are Social Media Marketing the correct words to use in the definition? Maybe, but it is difficult to determine based on the extremely progressive nature of the platforms that we use.
I've read about some interestnig and maybe more accurate ways of describing the sector could such as Social Network Marketing or Social Influence Marketing. I feel that the interaction between humans is an important aspect to the definition so the word "social" works perfect, but media is a little too fuzzy and flimsy. Maybe subsitute with interaction but that is kind of redundant because of the word social (human interaction).
Media is considered to be a reference to the traditional one-way tools such as radio, print, and television so some consider it to be the wrong word for the definition. And you cant call it social marketing because that terminology has already been reserved for the use of marketing for the purpose of improving society in some way (also a loose definition).
Overall the topic is confusing but I think based on the nature of this web discussion forum it could be fun to share your opinions. So fire away and maybe we can come up with a new definition that works for everyone?
