Genetically Engineered Salmon

I just received an e-mail from Chefs Collaborative talking about genetically engineered salmon. Does anyone else have information on this? How quickly will this GE fish be approved to for farming and release into native salmon populations?

Please feel free to forward links to articles or studies. I'd like to know more about this issue.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it will hold a hearing on September 19th and 20th to review potential approval of genetically engineered (GE) salmon for commercial use. In tandem, the FDA will also hold a hearing on September 21st, 2010, to review whether or not to require labeling of GE fish should they be approved.

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) is spearheading a campaign to oppose approval of GE salmon until and unless further study indicates that they are safe for consumers, native fish populations, and the environment.

The fast-track timeline for the hearings is alarming and unusual and leaves little time for consumer input, so a "rapid response" effort is critical. There is a lot of information on the net - especially in discussions about GMO foods. It's frequently referred to as Frankenfish. Check the Organic Consumers groups. I can't get to my direct links at the moment but wanted to give you some places to look. I did a quick search in Google using frankenfish and there are numerous links - easy to find plenty of informaton.

I am personally completely opposed to it, as I am all GMO foods.
