What tricks do bartenders use keep track of information?
I've never bartended and am interested to know from seasoned bartenders some of the little details of how they do their work.
- How do you remember regulars' names, favorite drinks, birthdays, etc? Do you use a paper cheatsheet, have a great memory or another device/method? Any issues with these methods?
- How do you keep track of how many free drinks you've given per shift? Are there any issues with your current method?
- Is there any other information you need to do your job well that you have a difficult time remembering or keeping in a format that works well?
- Have you ever used a mobile phone at work to gather info that helps you work? If so what did you use it for? For example, store drink recipes, look up customer names/favorite drinks, check sports scores so you can chat about the game with customers, etc?

I ALWAYS REPEAT THEIR NAMES BACK AS SOON AS THEY TELL ME, AND I ALSO TRY TO ASSOCIATE SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP ME REMEMBER THEIR NAME. FOR INSTANCE, WHAT THEY ARE DRINKING, WHAT DO THEY DO FOR A LIVING, DID I HAVE A UNIQUE CONVERSATION WITH THEM, AND I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EXERCISE MY BRAIN TO REMEMBER THINGS MORE. FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS! WHICH IS SOMETIMES VERY HARD FOR ME SINCE I DAY DREAM A LOT! (I AM NOT YELLING, I JUST WANTED TO USE CAPS TO MAKE MY FONT DIFFERENT FROM YOURS :O) )
