Voice of the Restaurant Industry

Hey all...I am a GM of a popular brew pub & restaurant and was promoted due to years of practical knowledge but no formal schooling. Now i am being given the oppertunity to further my schooling in order to advance my knowledge in this industry...and the owners want me to focus on marketing. Has anyone out there been in this boat....or have a suggestion as to where to look for some classes to help me in this area....other then the obvious, restaurant management courses and such.

There are a lot of things in food service that are exceedingly specialized. But BASIC marketing is BASIC marketing. What I am saying is that, classes in your local community college or university will do you well, in the initial phases of your efforts. There are certainly specialized considerations for restaurants, such as menu selection, menu design, niche promotions...but all of them start with understanding the fundementals of marketing and promotions. You need to understand how to boil water, before you can steam a lobster.

Moreover, getting into basic marketing classes will simply open your eyes to what is possible. Seasoned markeging and sales professionals take seminars and classes all the time, not because they are new and need the elements; but because it refreshes their skills and - more than that - opens their eyes in a way that can generate more ideas of their own, well beyond what the seminar might offer.
well being a gm makes it hard to have time to go to classes. their are some online courses that make it easier for you to attend at your time.
No argument. But many of these on-line courses are offered by local community colleges.
all of Dan Kennedys books will help, the main thing I would start right now is building a customer data base.
