My Thoughts on Hosted Software and the Future of Paging Systems

Hi everyone!

I recently saw a post on HME Wireless's blog about guest paging systems. Here's the post: Choosing the right restaurant guest paging system.

I wrote a comment (which I doubt will be publicized), but I'd really like to know your thoughts on the subject. Here's my comment:

Russ, doesn't this post just outline if and how many pagers you need, not which paging system an establishment needs?

If cost is a primary concern, why go with expensive hardware in the first place? With initial setup costs of $2,000+ and replacement pagers costing anywhere from $50 to $80, these systems are far from inexpensive. There are many text message paging providers now that offer a truly cost-cutting installation. For example, the Recess Paging System can run off of any laptop computer or even iPod Touch, which brings the setup costs down to $200 per installation and just $79/mo after that. That's the equivalent of buying just one replacement pager each month.

Business operations are rapidly changing every day, and every day it's becoming cheaper and more efficient to leverage the web and mobile devices to perform everyday tasks. Check out Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's new Square, which allows you to accept credit card payments anywhere with an iPhone or iPod Touch. These types of applications are at the forefront of a hardware revolution. Hosted software is less expensive to build, maintain, and reiterate, making it a naturally superior product to hardware such as HME's guest paging systems, not to mention the tremendous cost savings that allows those businesses who couldn't afford the service before to enter the market.

I'd really appreciate your comments on the above thoughts, I think we're both trying to solve the same problem.

What do you guys think? Will hardware paging systems be around for long?

Warmest Regards,

I would use it and encourage others too. I see mobile as the future.
Mobile Matradee's restaurant pager system is a 3 in 1 solution; voice and text seating alert instantly to the guest's cell phone; web based wait list (or reservation) management interface and an optional permission based SMS mobile marketing program to drive traffic instantly!

If you are looking for a top notch restaurant marketing idea and if you have ever considered a restaurant paging system, you must take a hard look at Mobile Matradee.
I have several owner friends who have simply started calling customers from the house phone when their table is ready. Even paging systems take a little work. Collecting cell phone numbers with the wait list and calling customers when a table is ready offers a "free" solution that works very well.
