What are your thoughts on using refurbished point-of-sale hardware? Have you used it in the past or thought about using it? Why?

Why use a system who knows when it is going to die on you and which does not have any warranty or support.
A lot of people does not know these:
- All of the software you buy with your pos is not free to transfer, it usually is registered to your Restaurant.
- If you buy some refurbished POS, you will end up rebuying the full license of the POS software which will cost you as much as the new one.
-Also after you get charged for a new software, you will also be charged for support which will end up costing you more than a new one.
Please email me with any questions onur@benseron.com

thanks
Maybe.

I suppose that depends on which refurbished components you want to use.

Printers? Those are probably ok.
Computers? You can probably get a good deal on a refurb'd server/workstation, and put some new hard disks (or SSD drives) into them.

Of course, the bigger issue is going to be your software. Many POS resellers / dealers won't support any re-purchased software, and they may not support running new software on refurbished hardware.
There are two classifications of equipment that should never be purchased used, one is an ice machine and the other is POS. Of course it depends on the person selling it and the shape of the equipment and the availability of a warranty. Let the buyer beware!
We've not had good luck with used and referb equipment. Even receipt printers. We bought a few for testing purposes and about half never did work.
I have been in the refurbished product business which is signifally diferent than being a broker of used products.
Purchasing refurbished products through a manufactures certified program is the way to go since it would contain all the latest software and possibility a limited warrenty. The auto analogy would be purchasing a certified pre-owned car from a dealer or buying it at a used car lot.
This can usually depend on your processor and their service record. Generally, if you are processing with a reputable processor, for less than 5.00 per month all of your equipment can be insured with next day replacement or servicing. In most cases same day servicing. This includes equipment you already own. You also need to be aware that some POS hardware is no longer compliant and no matter what you do, you have just purchased something you cannot utilize.
