I’ve always been curious as to how restaurant owners keep up to date with the latest industry trends and news. In my opinion, I’ve looked to such titles as National Restaurant News, Fast Casual, QSR, and others as credible sources of industry information. I would suspect social media sites such as FohBoh and Twitter are emerging as a source. But for restaurant owners and workers, is the internet even your main source of information? If so, do you Google search or go to one of the above mentioned websites? How do you keep up to date with the changing laws and trends?
Good regional industry publications such as mine (sorry to brag!), Foodservice East and my website,www.foodserviceeast.com offer news for restaurateurs and foodservice operators in a given area of the country. Twitter is a pretty unreliable source - subject to rumor and gossip - I suspect. It's useful but I have to double check everything I see on it.
Take Susan's reply and insert my publication's name, Today's Restaurant at www.trnusa.com to find the news of the industry in Florida and our sister publication for Texas.
I receive an online newsletters from a publication known as The Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA).
As well, I go to another online service called HCareers.
Both of these sites provide very useful, and wide ranging informative topics about, and for, the hospitality industry here in Canada.
I also check into FOHBOH at least 3 - 4 times a week, just to 'keep in touch with those in the industry right now!'
www.restaurant.org I know some people will say no way, but there is a great deal of information available from this site. I especially go here for industry standards and other stats
Much like you, I subscribe to a dozen periodicals and go through them page by page examining everything. When I find an article, ad or picture that piques my interest, I tend to turn to google to find more on it.
I also spend a considerable amount of time at websites that I've found useful to our niche specifically, including FohBoh. I visit them daily, checking in to see what is new. Some days are quiet, some days are like an avalanche of information.
