I don't know if you know Contra Costa College culinary program. It is directed now by Nader Sharkes, who was behind Diablo College's success. CC is an excellent program affordable for students who could not otherwise afford to enter the industry. In a month they will be having their annual food event, whose proceeds send at least five students to study in Europe for a couple of weeks. (Is that cool or what?) We are seeking additions for the silent auction and wines. Signed cookbooks, autographed aprons, any neat idea. Restaurants or wineries who want to participate should contact the college.
(I don't think this is self promotion, is it? What about an educational and non profit category?)

And by the way, don't y'all think it's high time for this industry to press for high school trade based programs as in days of yore? We started one at John O'Connell, which was destroyed when the Harvard Phd principal determined it would be a great place to occupy special needs students. Even at it's height, it only offered about fifteen real minutes of kitchen time a day. I have been doing this recruiting thing for way to long, but one sad advantage is that I remember the quality of people who prepared for their culinary schools with a votech training program, or who went straight from votech into the industry. Think Patrick Clark.

Now would be the time to start...the Swiss say the trades have a golden foundation. How many stock brokers wish today they had learned to cook instead? Think about it. I have documentation, if anyone is interested.
