As part of a revamping of our entire training and onboarding process, we're looking at how we have our prospective new employees fill out an application. We have applications on our website as well as in our stores, but am looking for something a little more. Does anyone do anything unique or different with their application process? I've heard of one restaurant chain that gives new prospects a blank sheet of paper and asks them to fill it out however they want. Anyone do anything similar? Any ideas of refreshing this first look into a new employee (and first look for a new employee into you?)
We use the Batrus Holleweg system to evaluate our employees. They complete a personality profile so that we can learn more about them. We have both food and games at our establishment. Some stores hand out game cards to introduce them to our concept. Almost all stores offer some kind of beverage to applicants, and we ask our front desk/host staff to inform managers when an applicant arrives. This way we can put a face to the name. It's hard to just pick someone out of a stack of applications.
On the actual application process? Not sure if I would touch that. There are all sorts of legal things tied to applications which is why they are usually standard. I would tell you it is in your service and the making of a good first impression that matters.
Remember...just because you don't hire them...you don't want to lose them as a guest, too. A bad first impression hurts more than your retention numbers....
