The NRA is starting its internal, annual food drive contest benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank. We compete as teams and see which group donates the most food based on a point system. There's only one rule: No ramen noodles allowed!
I also recently spent time at the DC Central Kitchen chopping up vegetables for meals to be distributed to the less fortunate. This particular organization also offers a 12-week culinary job training course to help folks find work in the restaurant industry. At the end, students take the ServSafe exam.
Both activities are very rewarding. But they do differ. Is it better to just give fish... or teach people how to fish? Does it depend on the situation?
The old saying is "teach a man to fish and you've fed him for life," I believe. Both are probably necessary. But teaching is essential. In Boston, the Pine Street Inn does similar things.
